The Alta Murgia National Park, established in 2004, is a nature reserve located in Puglia, in the provinces of Bari and Barletta-Andria-Trani. Extends in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani and in the province of Bari, on the highest part of the Murge plateau to the Northwest. Coincides with part of the largest special protection area established to protect the steppe Graminaceee, habitat of the lesser Kestrel. Among the main attractions of the Park include Castel del Monte. Originally the trees were widespread, today they find themselves isolated specimens only of downy oak. On the other hand are widespread low and medium grass species, such as the Daffodil and the ferule. In the Park grow plants or shrubs for food, like the oyster mushroom and wild blackberries. Fungal species we find the mushroom cardoncello and numerous other non-edible species. The Park Authority, in collaboration with the Centro Studi Naturalistici onlus is carrying out a feasibility study to evaluate the possibility of reintroducing the little Bustard in the territory of the Murgia.
