Brembana Valley

Guide: Mountains and Valleys, Lombardia

Val Brembana – Lombardy: clear waters, stone villages and paths in the mountains of Bergamo. The Brembana Valley extends north of Bergamo, following the course of the Brembo river through narrow valleys, beech forests and villages lying at the foot of the Orobie. It is a valley rich in history, alpine culture and natural environments, crisscrossed by historic paths and routes that connect refuges, hot springs and villages with deep roots. 🏞️ Mountain villages and timeless atmospheres: Among the most characteristic centers stand out Cornello dei Tasso, reachable only on foot along a paved mule track, San Pellegrino Terme, with its Art Nouveau buildings and spas, and Branzi, gateway to the highest valleys. Along the valley you can still encounter mills, medieval bridges and rural courtyards. 👉 Tip: Visit the Museum of Tasso and Postal History: you will discover how one of the first European postal systems started from this hidden corner of the Alps. 🥾 Excursions for all levels: The Brembana Valley is crossed by a dense hiking network: they range from simple walks along the river to climbs to refuges and peaks such as Pizzo del Diavolo or Monte Cavallo. Numerous routes start from places such as Foppolo, Carona and Mezzoldo. 👉 Tip: Try the itinerary to the Devil's Lake from Carona: easy and suggestive, it crosses woods and clearings to a small lake nestled between the rocks. 🚴 ♂️ Greenways and historic streets: The Brembana Valley Cycle Path, built on the route of a disused railway, connects Zogno to Piazza Brembana through illuminated tunnels, bridges and small villages. It is also suitable for families, with equipped rest points along the way. 👉 Tip: Rent an electric bike in San Pellegrino and ride along a section of the cycle path - a perfect way to explore the valley in an active and sustainable way. 🍽️ High-altitude gastronomic tradition: The cuisine of the Brembana Valley is linked to mountain raw materials: polenta taragna, cheeses such as Formai de Mut, artisanal cured meats, barley and mushroom soups. The restaurants and huts in the area offer simple but authentic dishes, often linked to the seasons and local products. 👉 Tip: In autumn, take part in a Bitto or Taroz festival: an opportunity to experience the valley among scents, music and handed down knowledge. The Brembana Valley is made up of gentle climbs and severe slopes, of clear water and living stone. An alpine balance that tells stories of effort, beauty and deep roots.
