Scalve Valley

Guide: Mountains and Valleys, Lombardia

Scalve Valley – Lombardy: wild nature, mines and Orobic peaks between silence and green plateaus. The Scalve Valley, located in the north-east of the province of Bergamo, is a corner of the Orobie Prealps that is still little known, but capable of offering authentic landscapes and intact mountain environments. Enclosed by high rocky walls, it develops between woods, streams and small towns with an alpine character. ⛰️ Excursions between plateaus and panoramic forks: The valley is crossed by numerous paths that connect pastures, refuges and forks overlooking the nearby valleys. Routes such as those leading to the Tagliaferri Refuge or the Vivione Pass offer immersive experiences at high altitude, among chamois, rhododendrons and spectacular views. 👉 Tip: The hike to the Passo dei Campelli, above Schilpario, is one of the most accessible and panoramic: also suitable for inexperienced walkers. ⛏️ Mines, geology and memory of the subsoil: The Scalve Valley has a strong link with the mining tradition. The Schilpario Mines, which can be visited today, tell the story of centuries of work in the heart of the mountain, including tunnels, original tools and stories of hard work and ingenuity. 👉 Tip: Book a guided tour of the mines: with a helmet on your head, you can explore an amazing underground world, which is also suitable for children. 🌳 Alpine villages and local traditions: The villages of the valley – Vilminore, Azzone, Colere, Schilpario – preserve stone architecture, historic fountains and small local museums. They are authentic places, where the seasons can be felt in the scents of the air and in the rhythms of everyday life. 👉 Tip: Stroll through the historic center of Vilminore di Scalve and stop at a bakery to enjoy spongada, a fluffy dessert traditional of the area. ❄️ Winter between skiing, snowshoeing and snow-covered woods: During the cold season, the valley is transformed into a postcard landscape. In Schilpario there are some of the most beautiful Nordic ski slopes in the Italian Alps, as well as itineraries for snowshoeing and ski mountaineering. 👉 Tip: If you love cross-country skiing, explore the Pista degli Abeti: a technical track immersed in a beautiful pine forest, regularly groomed and also suitable for beginners. The Scalve Valley preserves the breath of real mountains: silent, deep, capable of telling ancient stories with the language of rock, wood and wind.
