Island of Levanzo

Guide: Sea & Islands, Sicilia

Levanzo Island – Sicily: prehistoric caves, transparent waters and the pure essence of life on the sea. Levanzo is the smallest of the Egadi Islands, a place where quiet reigns and everything moves according to the rhythm of the wind and waves. There are no paved roads or cars, just a small village of white houses by the sea, dusty paths between rock and Mediterranean scrub, and a sea with turquoise reflections that embraces every glimpse. 🗿 Prehistoric caves and archaeological heritage: The island is famous for the Grotta del Genovese, which houses engravings and cave paintings dating back to the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods. A unique site, reachable only on foot or by boat, which bears witness to the human presence since ancient times and adds charm to an already extraordinary landscape. 👉 Tip: Book a guided tour in advance: the cave is only accessible with a guide and places are limited for conservation reasons. 🌊 Crystal clear coves and postcard sea: Levanzo is surrounded by small bays of pebbles and rocks, with transparent waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Among the most beautiful are Cala Fredda, Cala Minnola and Cala Tramontana. Each cove has its own atmosphere and can be reached with a short walk from the village. 👉 Tip: Bring rock shoes and a mask with you: even without diving, the sea of Levanzo offers extraordinary views. 🚶 Hikes and peaceful views: The paths of Levanzo cross rocky hills, abandoned terraces and cliffs overlooking the sea. Walking along the paths that connect the coves or climbing to the viewpoints of the island is one of the best ways to enjoy its silence and the colors of the landscape. 👉 Tip: Set off in the cool hours of the morning or at sunset to discover the north coast with soft lights and a breathtaking view of Marettimo. 🏡 Discreet hospitality and suspended atmosphere: The accommodation facilities are few and on a human scale: typical houses, small apartments, panoramic B&Bs. The village offers a few restaurants of simple cuisine, based on fish and island products, and essential shops. The nights are quiet, illuminated only by the moon and the sound of the sea. 👉 Tip: Book in advance if you travel in summer: the offer is limited, but staying in the center allows you to fully experience the island even without transport. Levanzo is a place that does not try to impress, but still manages to remain in the memory with its luminous simplicity and the rare charm of the essential.
