Marine Nature Reserve of the Egadi Islands

Guide: Natural Parks, Sicilia

Marine Nature Reserve of the Egadi Islands – Sicily: clear seabed, submerged meadows and sea life between Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo. The Marine Nature Reserve of the Egadi Islands is the largest marine protected area in Europe. It extends around the Egadi archipelago, in the stretch of sea between Trapani and Marsala, embracing the islands of Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo. Here, turquoise waters and intact marine habitats are home to a surprising biodiversity, protected by careful rules and virtuous environmental management. 🌊 A sunken paradise to explore: The seabed of the Egadi Islands is home to submerged caves, rocky shallows and expanses of Posidonia oceanica, a true underwater "forest" of the Mediterranean. The presence of rare species such as the monk seal and the Caretta caretta turtle makes this stretch of sea exceptionally precious. 👉 Tip: Book a guided snorkeling or diving excursion with authorized operators: the underwater routes around Cala Rossa and Punta Bassana are among the most evocative in the reserve. 🚤 Coves, caves and unspoiled landings: Each island of the archipelago offers bays and inlets accessible only by sea: from Cala Minnola in Levanzo, rich in submerged archaeological finds, to the Camel Cave of Marettimo. Favignana, the largest, offers Mediterranean views between tuff and sea. 👉 Tip: Rent a small electric boat or join a daily mini-cruise: it's the best way to discover the most hidden coves without impacting the environment. 🐟 Fishing traditions and environmental protection: The area is also the guardian of ancient practices related to the sea, such as the tuna fishery of Favignana. Today, artisanal fishing coexists with the protection of the ecosystem, offering a virtuous example of sustainable development. Visitors can get to know these traditions up close in the small museums of the sea and in the information centers of the reserve. 👉 Tip: Visit the former Florio factory in Favignana, an extraordinary example of industrial archaeology dedicated to tuna processing: a journey down memory lane and into the sea. 🏡 Hospitality on the islands: The accommodation facilities in the Egadi range from B&Bs overlooking the sea to typical stone houses, up to sustainable accommodation managed by residents. The islands offer quiet, starry skies, slow rhythms and simple and tasty seafood cuisine, including couscous, busiate, tuna and local preserves. 👉 Tip: Stay at least two nights on Marettimo to experience the wildest soul of the archipelago, with coastal trekking and quiet evenings between the scent of myrtle and sea breeze. The Egadi Marine Reserve is an invitation to listen to the Mediterranean in a whisper, between slow waves, submerged silences and nature that breathes deeply.
