Mount Amiata

Guide: Mountains and Valleys, Toscana

Monte Amiata – Tuscany: extinct volcano, living forests and stone villages in the heart of the highest Tuscany. Monte Amiata dominates southern Tuscany with its over 1,700 meters high. An ancient volcano and today a sacred mountain, it is a place where nature, spirituality, tradition and breathtaking landscapes meet. Surrounded by beech and chestnut woods, between the Val d'Orcia, the Maremma and the Sienese area, it is an authentic destination in every season. 🌳 Nature, paths and silence at high altitude: Amiata is a paradise for hikers and mountain lovers: dozens of paths cross beech forests, streams, volcanites, high-altitude meadows and nature reserves. In summer it is a cool escape from the heat, in autumn it is the kingdom of foliage and mushrooms, in winter it offers ski slopes and snowshoeing. 👉 Tip: Climb to the Monumental Crucifix on the summit: the view opens up over the whole of Tuscany to the sea on clear days. 🏘️ Stone villages and suspended atmospheres: The villages at the foot of Mount Amiata – such as Abbadia San Salvatore, Castel del Piano, Santa Fiora, Piancastagnaio and Seggiano – preserve Romanesque churches, castles, convents and living traditions. Walking through their historic centers is a journey through history, art and authenticity. 👉 Tip: Visit Santa Fiora and discover the water garden, with its springs in the heart of the village. 🥾 Excursions between ridges and chestnut groves: The mountain is perfect for trekking: you can walk along panoramic ridges, paths that cross centuries-old chestnut groves and spiritual itineraries linked to hermitages and ancient abbeys. The Via Francigena Path and the Via delle Sette Madonne touch some of the most fascinating places in the area. 👉 Tip: Start from Abbadia for the Monte Amiata ring, a varied excursion through woods, volcano and spectacular views. 🍂 Mountain flavors and excellent products: The cuisine of Amiata is rich and seasonal: porcini mushrooms, IGP chestnuts, ricotta, alpine cheeses and artisanal cured meats are flanked by rustic soups, polenta, grilled meats and chestnut flour desserts. The local red wines go perfectly with the strong flavors of the area. 👉 Tip: Stop at a trattoria in Piancastagnaio to taste macaroni with mushroom sauce and sausage: a typical and hearty dish. 🛏️ Where to stay: The hospitality on the Amiata is authentic and relaxing: mountain huts, B&Bs in medieval villages, farmhouses in the woods and renovated historic residences. Many facilities offer experiences related to the area: guided walks, chestnut picking, themed dinners. 👉 Tip: Choose accommodation between Abbadia and Castel del Piano to be convenient to the most lively paths and villages in the area. Monte Amiata surprises with its silent force: it is the ideal place for those who want to rediscover the most authentic Tuscany, among nature, villages and traditions that are still alive.
