Aosta is located in a flat area, but is completely fenced in by glaciers and lovely alpine peaks. She was born as a military colony in the time of Augustus in 25 BC and for this reason there are remains of the Roman period that are undoubtedly among the most important in Northern Italy such as the temple, the Forum and the cryptoporticus which are located in the city centre in the Piazza del Duomo. The city of Aosta is located roughly in the middle of the autonomous region of Valle d'Aosta in the plain in which flows the main river of the region: the Dora Baltea. On important mountains including the Aosta dominate Becca di Nona, Monte Emilius and Becca di Viou, Chaligne Tip. The town is crossed from North to South, at the Augustan arch, from the river Buthier, one of the many tributaries of the Dora Baltea.
