The Camonica Valley is one of the largest valleys of the central Alps, in eastern Lombardy, about 90 km long. It starts from Passo del Tonale, at 1,883 meters above sea level and ends at Corna Trentapassi near Pisogne, on Lake Iseo. It has an area of about 1,335 km2 and 118,323 inhabitants. It is crossed in all its length by the upper course of the river Oglio, which originates in Ponte di Legno and has its mouth in the Sebino between Pisogne and Costa Volpino. Valle Camonica derives its name from the Latin term with which the classical writers once called the population that lived there: the Camuni. Almost all of the valley is included in the administrative territory of the province of Brescia, excluding the municipalities of Lovere, Rogno and Costa Volpino which are part of the province of Bergamo.
