The Isarco Valley (Eisacktal in German, Val dl Isarch in Ladin) is one of the two main valleys of South Tyrol which extends from the source of the Inn River at Brenner to the mouth in the South Tyrol in Bolzano. The total length of about 80 km, Eisacktal, is crossed by the river and includes some towns as Ponte Gardena and Bressanone, Chiusa (Vipiteno is included in the Valley but it is part of the Wipptal). From the point of view of the Valley separates the Alps (Stubai Alps and Sarntal Alps) from Western Tauern Alps (Alps of Zillertal) and the Dolomites. For historical and cultural reasons, the Isarco Valley proper is the area south of the fortress. The upper Valley of Isarco is called Wipptal and constitutes an area in its own right. The Valley is divided into three geographical district communities of: Wipp and Eisack Valley Jump-Sciliar (Salten-Schlern). The capital of the greater geographical area Eisacktal Valley Center is Brixen.
