Description
The Sacra di San Michele is an architectural complex located on Mount Pirchiriano, at the entrance of the Val di Susa; it is located in the territory of the municipality of Sant'Ambrogio di Torino and belongs to the diocese of Susa. It is the symbolic monument of the Piedmont region. Renovated, it is entrusted to the care of the Rosminian fathers. The Sacra is of San Michele because it was born and grows with its history and its structures around the cult of San Michele who landed in Val di Susa in the fifth or sixth centuries. Its location on high ground and in a highly suggestive setting, immediately recalls the two Micaelic settlements of Gargano and Normandy. Founded between 983 and 987 on the rocky spur of Mount Pirchiriano, it is located in the middle of a pilgrimage route of over two thousand kilometers that connects almost all of Western Europe from Mont-Saint-Michel to Monte Sant'Angelo. In recent years the Sacra has received special, generous and encouraging attention from public and private bodies. The Superintendents have always carried out an action aimed at the protection and enhancement of the monument: they do so with targeted studies, soliciting and guaranteeing the indispensable restoration interventions by the competent state bodies. Among the most important interventions we remember: the complete renovation of the roof of the church and the old monastery; the restoration of the Zodiac Portal, tables and canvases; the conservative recovery of the Tomb of the Monks, the ancient foresterie and the rampant arches. Alongside these interventions, the Sacra has resumed to live intense moments of religious and cultural initiatives: the liturgical-religious care of the ancient sanctuary of Michael; an annual conference, since 1992, with publication of the acts; numerous concerts in the sanctuary, in the months of May, June and September, with special guided tours of the old monastery; an increasingly qualified service of accompaniment-guidance and reception, with training courses managed by the Association of Volunteers of the Sacred; the reorganization and strengthening of the library, with the relative filing of all the books. Article 1 of Regional Law 68 of 21 December 1994 states: the Region recognizes the Sacra di San Michele as a symbolic monument of Piedmont, for its centuries-old history, for the testimonies of spirituality, boldness, art, culture and the admirable synthesis of the most peculiar characteristics that it can offer of Piedmont, as well as for its exceptional location and visibility.
