Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park - Abruzzo

Guide: Natural Parks, Abruzzo

Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park – Abruzzo majestic among peaks, plateaus and endless forests. The Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park is one of the largest in Europe and embraces three regions: Abruzzo, Lazio and Marche. The Abruzzo part, which develops between the provinces of L'Aquila, Teramo and Pescara, is a mosaic of imposing mountains, lunar plateaus, wild woods, stone villages and unique biodiversity. It is the kingdom of the Corno Grande and the Piano di Campo Imperatore. ⛰️ Gran Sasso: the roof of the Apennines: The Corno Grande, with its 2,912 meters, is the highest peak in the Apennines. Here is also the small Calderone Glacier, the southernmost in Europe. Hiking, climbing and extraordinary views attract enthusiasts from all over the world every year. 👉 Tip: If you are an expert, tackle the hike to the summit of the Corno Grande from Campo Imperatore, starting early in the morning. 🏞️ Campo Imperatore: the little Tibet of Italy: The Campo Imperatore plateau extends for over 20 km between the Gran Sasso mountains. It is a unique scenery, between pastures, canyons and endless skies. In summer it is the kingdom of shepherds and excursions, in winter it becomes a suggestive ski resort. 👉 Tip: Stop at the Campo Imperatore Hotel, famous for hosting Mussolini in 1943, now a starting point for several excursions. 🌲 Monti della Laga: unspoiled nature and waterfalls: The Laga Mountains, further north, offer a completely different landscape: dense forests, rushing waterfalls, flowery plateaus and deep silences. They are ideal for those looking for unspoiled nature and off-the-beaten-path paths. 👉 Tip: Explore the Morricana Waterfalls from Cesacastina, one of the most amazing places in the park, perfect for a summer hike. 🐺 Biodiversity to discover: The park is home to wolves, deer, Abruzzo chamois, golden eagles and many rare floristic species. It is also home to important environmental studies and a naturalistic observatory of great value. 👉 Tip: Join a guided hike in the Farindola or Pietracamela area to spot wildlife safely. 🏘️ High-altitude villages and authentic identity: Santo Stefano di Sessanio, Castel del Monte, Calascio, Pietracamela and other villages in the park preserve an intact soul: stone architecture, silence, craftsmanship and mountain flavors. 👉 Tip: Reach the Rocca Calascio at sunrise or sunset: one of the most photographed and evocative places in the whole of Abruzzo. 🍝 Strong flavors of the mountains: Cheeses such as canestrato from Castel del Monte, lentils from Santo Stefano, grilled meats, mushrooms, truffles and rustic desserts make the park's cuisine intense and genuine. 👉 Tip: Stop to eat at an inn in Castel del Monte: try a plate of homemade pasta with wild boar sauce. 🛌 Sleeping under the stars of Abruzzo: The park offers refuges, scattered hotels, farmhouses, panoramic B&Bs and campsites for every type of traveler. Perfect for those who want to disconnect from the routine and live in contact with nature. 👉 Tip: Sleep in a stone farmhouse in Santo Stefano di Sessanio for a night of history, silence and stars. The Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga Park is the Abruzzo that leaves you breathless: majestic, mysterious and free. A territory that can be discovered at a slow pace, in every season.
