Circeo National Park

Guide: Natural Parks, Lazio

Circeo National Park – Lazio: dunes, lakes, forests and myths between the Tyrrhenian Sea and thousand-year-old promontories. The Circeo National Park, established in 1934, is one of the oldest in Italy and the only one to protect a complete coastal ecosystem. It extends along the southern Tyrrhenian strip of Lazio, between San Felice Circeo, Sabaudia and the Circeo promontory, embracing dunes, lakes, lowland forest, wetlands and stretches of coast among the most evocative in the region. 🌊 Sand dunes and wild coastline: Between Sabaudia and Capo Portiere there is one of the longest Italian coastal dunes, covered with junipers, mastic trees, sea lilies and psammophilous plants. Behind, the coastal lakes create a landscape suspended between land and water, where the light changes every hour. 👉 Tip: Walk at sunset along the path on the dune ridge between Lake Fogliano and the sea: the vegetation smells of resin and salt, and the sky is reflected in the flat water. 🌿 Lowland forest and unique biodiversity: The heart of the park is the Circeo Forest, one of the last Italian lowland forests, populated by oaks, holm oaks, alders and ash trees. Paths accessible to all allow you to explore this rare and shady habitat, frequented by fallow deer, wild boars, foxes and herons. 👉 Tip: Follow the path of the Roman Aqueduct in the forest: an easy and evocative walk between history and nature. 🦩 Wetlands and birdwatching: The coastal lakes of Fogliano, Monaci, Caprolace and Paola are essential for the stopover of numerous migratory birds. Pink flamingos, grey herons, black-winged stilts and wild ducks find refuge in these protected bodies of water. 👉 Tip: Bring binoculars with you and visit the Fogliano Visitor Center: the best routes for nature observation start from here. ⛰️ Circeo Promontory: myth and geology: The Circeo promontory, with its 541 meters high, dominates the landscape and is home to caves, cliffs, panoramic paths and human traces dating back to the Paleolithic. Linked to the myth of Circe, it is now a hiking destination and an extraordinary observation point on the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Pontine Islands. 👉 Tip: Going up to the Picco di Circe you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the archipelago and the curved line of the Tyrrhenian coast. One of the most evocative walks in Lazio. 🏘️ Villages and rationalist architecture: The territory of the park also includes places of historical and architectural interest, such as Sabaudia, an example of a rationalist city of the 30s, and San Felice Circeo, an ancient fishing village perched on the promontory, with spectacular views and alleys in living stone. 👉 Tip: Stroll in the historic center of San Felice in the evening: the views at sunset are among the most beautiful on the Lazio coast. The Circeo Park is a perfect synthesis of sea, woods, water and legend. A landscape in motion where time, like the tides, follows the rhythm of nature and memory.
