Monti Lucretili Regional Natural Park

Guide: Natural Parks, Lazio

Regional Natural Park of the Lucretili Mountains – Lazio: high-altitude beech forests, secret paths and vast views between Sabina and the Roman Countryside. The Regional Natural Park of the Lucretili Mountains extends between the provinces of Rome and Rieti, on a mountainous area that still preserves wild environments, rocky ridges, wooded valleys and small stone villages. This portion of the Lazio Apennines, established as a park in 1989, offers a surprising variety of landscapes and a naturalistic richness just a few kilometers from the capital. 🌳 Deep forests and hidden plateaus: The heart of the park is made up of silent beech forests, holm oaks, turkey oaks and karst plateaus where sinkholes, high meadows and shady gorges open up. Monte Pellecchia (1,368 m) and Monte Gennaro (1,271 m) dominate the area with spectacular views of Sabina, Rome and the Terminillo massif. 👉 Tip: Reach the Pratone di Monte Gennaro from the Scarpellata path: a grassy hill with a wide view, ideal for a break in the middle of nature. 🏞️ Lakes, sinkholes and karst landscapes: Among the most evocative places are the Lagustelli di Percile, two small lakes of karst origin set in the woods, inserted in a protected wetland. The surrounding environment preserves spontaneous blooms, butterflies, amphibians and a landscape of rare harmony. 👉 Tip: Visit the Lagustelli in spring: the colors of the vegetation and the silence of the forest make the experience unforgettable. 🚶 ♀️ Hiking network between ridges and villages: The park is crisscrossed by over 200 km of marked trails, suitable for all levels. Some routes follow ancient transhumance routes, others cross woods and clearings to the panoramic viewpoints. Many routes connect small villages such as Licenza , Percile, Marcellina and San Polo dei Cavalieri. 👉 Tip: Walk the loop from Monteflavio to Fonte Campitello: a walk through beech forests, springs and sweeping views, perfect in autumn. 🦅 Wildlife and open skies: The Lucretili Mountains are the habitat of numerous animal species: among the most significant, the golden eagle, the Apennine wolf, the fox, the buzzard and the eagle owl. The flora also has rare elements such as the Sabine iris and the storax. 👉 Tip: Bring binoculars and stop on the ridges near Monte Pellecchia: with a little luck you might spot the flight of the eagle. 🏘️ Villages and spirituality between stone and silence: The villages within the park retain a strong identity: stone houses, paved streets, fountains and Romanesque churches blend with the mountain landscape. In Licenza you can visit the remains of Horace's Villa, immersed in the countryside. San Polo and Percile, perched on rocky outcrops, offer intimate atmospheres and spectacular views. 👉 Tip: After a walk, take a break in a village trattoria: simple and seasonal flavors tell the story of the mountains with authenticity. The Lucretili Mountains Park is a place where the landscape becomes a refuge and nature shows itself without clamour. Here each path is a line that crosses the quiet and returns breath, light and silence.
