Monti Simbruini Regional Natural Park

Guide: Natural Parks, Lazio

Monti Simbruini Regional Natural Park – Lazio: endless woods, water hills and stone villages between Lazio and Abruzzo. The Regional Natural Park of the Simbruini Mountains, established in 1983, is the largest protected area in Lazio. It extends for over 30,000 hectares between the province of Rome and the border with Abruzzo, including mountain landscapes, spectacular beech forests, spring waterways and stone villages surrounded by nature. A place where time slows down and the mountain becomes an authentic refuge. 🌲 Monumental beech forests and crystalline springs: The Simbruini are famous for their beech forests, among the largest in the central Apennines. In spring and autumn they offer spectacular landscapes. The sources of the Aniene, near Filettino and Jenne, are one of the most evocative environments in the park, surrounded by woods, caves and stretches of crystal clear water. 👉 Tip: Walk to the Capore dell'Aniene from Trevi in Lazio: the sound of the water gushing between the rocks will accompany you all along the way. ⛰️ Apennine peaks and paths between ridges: The highest mountains in the park, such as Monte Viglio (2,156 m), Monte Tarino and Monte Autore, offer panoramic itineraries with views ranging from the Gran Sasso to the Castelli Romani. The paths cross woods, high pastures and ancient sheep tracks. 👉 Tip: Walk the Monte Autore ring from Campo dell'Osso: an accessible excursion full of views, also ideal for families accustomed to walking. 🏘️ Silent villages and mountain tradition: Inside the park there are authentic villages such as Subiaco, Jenne, Cervara di Roma, Trevi nel Lazio and Filettino. Built in stone, collected on rocky spurs or lying in the valleys, they preserve peasant traditions, medieval architecture and a strong link with the mountains. 👉 Tip: Visit Subiaco and the Benedictine Monasteries of St. Scholastica and St. Benedict: spirituality, art and landscape meet in a timeless place. 🐾 Biodiversity and protected nature: The park is the habitat of Apennine wolves, deer, golden eagles, wild cats and numerous species of amphibians and rare insects. The altitudinal variety favors the presence of very different environments: from mountain meadows to humid gorges, from rocky walls to streams. 👉 Tip: Take a guided hike with the park guides: there are often activities dedicated to wildlife and observation of animals in their habitat. 🚶 ♀️ Historical paths and spiritual paths: The territory is crossed by important paths such as the Way of St. Benedict, the Via dei Lupi and the Coleman Path, dedicated to the English landscape painter. They are slow itineraries, which combine nature and culture, designed for expert walkers and lovers of traveling on foot. 👉 Tip: Follow a stretch of the Way of St. Benedict between Trevi and Subiaco: among woods and villages, you will discover a hidden and silent Lazio. The Simbruini Mountains are real mountains: deep silences, breathing forests, water flowing between the rocks. A living landscape, which invites walking, contemplation and respect.
