Cinque Terre

Guide: Sea & Islands, Liguria

Cinque Terre – Liguria: suspended vineyards, vertical villages and paths between sea and sky. The Cinque Terre are located along the eastern coast of Liguria, between Levanto and La Spezia. Five unique villages – Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore – carved into the rock and overlooking a steep and spectacular stretch of coastline. A landscape shaped over the centuries by peasant hands and protected today by the Cinque Terre National Park and the UNESCO World Heritage Site. 🍇 Terracing and heroic viticulture: The hills overlooking the sea are covered with terraced vineyards, supported by hand-built dry stone walls. Here native vines such as Vermentino and Bosco are grown, from which the famous Sciacchetrà is born, a raisin wine symbol of peasant tenacity and the local agricultural landscape. 👉 Tip: Visit a winery in Manarola or Volastra to taste Sciacchetrà accompanied by focaccia and cheeses: intense flavors that speak of rock, wind and sun. 🚶 ♀️ Panoramic paths and overhanging nature: The Cinque Terre are crossed by a dense network of panoramic paths, which connect the villages to each other and climb towards silent ridges. The best known is the Blue Path, but each hamlet offers spectacular routes through vineyards, olive groves and sudden views of the open sea. 👉 Tip: Walk at sunset from Corniglia to Vernazza: an evocative stretch between golden light, calm sea and the scent of Mediterranean scrub. 🏘️ Villages suspended between sky and sea: Each village has its own identity: Monterosso with its beach and lemon groves, Vernazza with its colorful marina, Corniglia perched high on a spur, Manarola with its vertical houses that touch the waves, Riomaggiore with its narrow streets and steep alleys. A mosaic of spontaneous architecture and resistant beauty. 👉 Tip: Visit the villages out of season, in spring or autumn: you will discover a slower pace and the authentic everyday life of the inhabitants. 🌊 Clear sea and postcard views: The Cinque Terre offer coves, rocky inlets and small beaches perfect for a swimming stop. The water is clear and deep, with seabeds suitable for snorkeling and underwater photography. The views, from land or sea, offer some of the most iconic views in Italy. 👉 Tip: Set off by boat from La Spezia or Levanto to see the villages from the sea: the perspective changes everything and makes every profile even more impressive. 🌿 A park to be experienced with respect: The Cinque Terre National Park protects a fragile and extraordinary territory, where beauty is the result of an ancient balance between nature and human work. Walking along the paths, respecting the crops, choosing sustainable means of transport is part of the travel experience. 👉 Tip: Use the train or walk through the villages: you will avoid traffic and really experience the area, listening to the sounds, breathing the scents, observing the details. The Cinque Terre are a vertical poem written between rock and sea. An interweaving of beauty, fatigue and light that invites you to stop, observe and walk slowly.
