Avigliana Lakes

Guide: Lakes, Piemonte

Avigliana Lakes – Piedmont: bodies of water at the foot of the Sacra and nature between history and mountains. The Avigliana Lakes are located in the western part of the Val di Susa, within the Avigliana Lakes Natural Park, less than 30 kilometers from Turin. Surrounded by woods, morainic hills and pre-Alpine reliefs, they offer a varied scenery where water meets nature and historical evidence. 🌊 Two lakes, two identities: The Lago Grande is the most popular and equipped: it offers swimming areas, water sports and cycle paths. The Lago Piccolo, less accessible, is wilder and more intimate, surrounded by spontaneous vegetation. Both are of glacial origin and represent important environments for local biodiversity. 👉 Tip: Take the circular path that surrounds Lake Piccolo: shaded and quiet, it is ideal for a relaxing walk in the middle of nature. 🪶 Birdlife and wetlands to observe: The wetlands around the lakes are populated by numerous species of water birds: grebes, grey herons, kingfishers and coots are among the most sighted. The environment is quiet and easily accessible, perfect for activities such as birdwatching and nature photography. 👉 Tip: Bring binoculars and visit the protected areas in the early hours of the morning, when bird activity is greatest. 🚣 ♀️ Outdoor activities and sustainable tourism: On Lake Grande you can practice canoeing, sup, free swimming and sailing. The shores are equipped with beaches, refreshment points and green areas, but remain integrated into the environmental context of the park. You can also explore the area by bike thanks to a network of cycle paths. 👉 Tip: In summer, choose the late afternoon for a kayak ride: the warm light and calm waters provide atmospheric moments. 🏰 Avigliana and the Sacra di San Michele: The medieval village of Avigliana retains the charm of stone houses, towers and cobbled streets. Not far away, on the top of Mount Pirchiriano, stands the Sacra di San Michele, a symbol of the region and an extraordinary panoramic point over the Val di Susa. 👉 Tip: After visiting the lakes, go up to the Sacra for sunset: the breadth of the view and the atmosphere of the place are unique. The Avigliana Lakes offer a space of quiet, nature and history, balanced between bodies of water, wooded hills and alpine horizons.
