Ogliastra

Guide: Mountains and Valleys, Sardegna

Ogliastra – Sardinia: white cliffs, deep gorges and villages clinging to the rock. Ogliastra is one of the most evocative regions of Sardinia, suspended between the clearest sea of the island and the. It extends along the eastern side, between the Gennargentu massif and the Gulf of Orosei, passing through villages nestled between canyons, plateaus and woods. Here nature is not the background: it is the absolute protagonist. ⛰️ A landscape of extreme contrasts: In Ogliastra you pass in a few kilometers from the vertical rocks of the Supramonte to the sandy coves between cliffs, from the valleys of the Flumendosa to the wild heights of Monte Gennargentu. The famous Gorropu Gorges, among the deepest in Europe, are just one of the many geological treasures that dot this territory full of mystery. 👉 Tip: Walk the Wild Blue Trail, even if only for one stage: sea and mountains touch each other in one of the most fascinating walks in the Mediterranean. 🌊 Unspoilt coastline and legendary coves: The beaches of Ogliastra are among the most iconic in Sardinia: Cala Goloritzé, Cala Mariolu, Cala Sisine and Cala Luna can only be reached by sea or with challenging treks. The transparent waters, the white cliffs and the silence make them places that remain etched in the memory. Even lesser-known areas, such as Su Sirboni or Cea, offer spectacular scenery. 👉 Tip: Set off by boat from Santa Maria Navarrese to explore the coves: some don't seem real, others don't even have names. 🏘️ Remote villages and proud communities: The villages of Ogliastra – Baunei, Urzulei, Talana, Ulassai, Lanusei, Seui – seem suspended in time. Stone architecture, ancient crafts, sincere hospitality and a strong sense of identity make them places where Sardinia shows itself without filters. Textile craftsmanship, pastoralism and contemporary art coexist in harmony. 👉 Tip: Visit Ulassai and the widespread works of Maria Lai: art, territory and memory come together in a unique way. 🥾 Trekking, canyons and ancient trees: Ogliastra is a land of paths: from the paths in the Supramonte of Baunei to the excursions in the limestone heels of Jerzu and Ulassai, from the thousand-year-old woods of Montarbu to the spectacular gorges of Sa Tappara or Gola di Pirincanes. Each path offers deep silences and views that seem to come out of a vertical dream. 👉 Tip: Walk up to St. George's Staircase: a cut in the vertical rock used by shepherds, today as fascinating as a natural portal. 🍴 Intense flavors and local cuisine: The typical dishes of Ogliastra tell the story of the mountains, the sea and self-sufficiency: Ogliastra culurgiones stuffed with potatoes and mint, slow-cooked porceddu, pistoccu bread, aged pecorino cheese, strawberry tree honey. The wines of the Tacchi – Cannonau and mineral rosés – are little known but surprising. 👉 Tip: Enter an Ogliastra house during a party: between the scents of roasts and warm bread, the territory reveals itself more than any guidebook. 🎉 Ancient rites and deep Sardinia: In Ogliastra, parties are not a show, but shared gestures. The processions, the fires, the masks, the tenor songs and the costumes tell of a collective memory that is still alive. Each village has its own anniversaries: some related to religion, others to the land, others to the simple need to meet again. 👉 Tip: If you can, visit Seui during Autumn in Barbagia: the village opens like a book, page after page, house after house. Ogliastra does not show itself immediately. It is known only to those who walk slowly, observe for a long time and are not afraid of silence.
