Sentiero della Bonifica – Tuscany: pedals and passes along the Canale Maestro della Chiana, among slow waters, fields and storks.
The Reclamation Path follows the route of the Canale Maestro della Chiana for about 62 km, connecting Arezzo to Chiusi along a flat cycle and pedestrian route immersed in the countryside. It is an ideal route for cycling, trekking, walking and slow tourism, which crosses a landscape shaped by man over the centuries, including canals, cultivated fields, bridges and aquatic fauna. 🚴 ♂️ A cycle path in the heart of the Val di Chiana:
The path is almost entirely flat, on a compact dirt or light asphalt surface, and lends itself to cycling excursions for all levels, including families. Along the route there are fountains, rest areas, viewpoints and information panels that tell the story of the reclamation of the valley.
👉 Tip: If you want to cover it all, start from Arezzo in the morning and end in Chiusi in a day: with trekking or gravel bikes it is a pleasant and accessible experience. 🕊️ Nature, water and wildlife observation:
The canal and its banks are ideal habitats for herons, night herons, egrets, storks, kingfishers and coots. The landscape changes with the seasons: in the spring and summer months, green colors and bodies of water dominate, while in autumn the countryside is tinged with yellow and ochre.
👉 Tip: Stop near the La Chianetta Oasis, near Montepulciano Stazione: excellent point for birdwatching and nature photography. 🏛️ Tuscan waters, history and engineering:
This route follows the route of an extraordinary hydraulic work, which since the 1700s has transformed the Val di Chiana from a swamp into fertile land. Between locks, Leopoldini bridges and regulation works, you can read the history of reclamation and Tuscan ingenuity. Along the way you will also encounter mills, historic farms and agricultural villages.
👉 Tip: Visit the Callone di Valiano, one of the most important hydraulic works on the route: functional architecture and rural landscape blend in harmony. 🛏️ Where to stay:
The route is well served by farmhouses, B&Bs, hostels and rural hotels near the main accesses: Arezzo, Cortona, Foiano, Montepulciano Stazione and Chiusi. It is also perfect for bikepacking or sustainable tourism travelers.
👉 Tip: If you want to divide the itinerary into two stages, stop in Foiano della Chiana or Castiglion Fiorentino: cozy and close to the cycle path.
The Reclamation Path is a slow journey through calm waters and orderly fields, where cycling or walking becomes a way to read the landscape with new eyes.
