Julian Prealps Natural Park

Guide: Natural Parks, Friuli Venezia Giulia

Julian Prealps Natural Park – Friuli-Venezia Giulia: between wild peaks, pure waters and extraordinary biodiversity. The Julian Prealps Natural Park is located in the north-east of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, on the border with Slovenia. This protected area is a crossroads between the Alpine, Balkan and Mediterranean worlds, with an exceptional variety of natural environments. It is a paradise for hikers, naturalists and those looking for an authentic and off-the-beaten-path mountain. ⛰️ Peaks and valleys to explore: The park includes imposing mountain groups such as Monte Canin and Montasio, but also deep and silent valleys, such as that of the Rio Bianco or Val Resia. Here nature expresses itself with strength and unspoiled beauty. 👉 Tip: Walk the path towards the Marussich Bivouac for a breathtaking view of the Sella Nevea basin. 🦉 Rare fauna and biodiversity: The park is home to a varied fauna: bears, lynxes, ibex, capercaillie, golden eagles and even the Aurora salamander, a very rare endemic species. The flora is equally rich, with wild orchids, alpine plants and lush woodlands. 👉 Tip: Visit the Visitor Center of Prato di Resia to discover the projects for the protection of protected species. 🌲 Paths and nature to experience: Numerous hiking routes crisscross the park, suitable for all levels of experience. From simple walks in the woods to mountaineering itineraries on the ridges, each excursion offers different emotions. In winter, snowshoeing offers a unique experience. 👉 Tip: Walk the Rio Nero Waterfall Trail, perfect on hot days for its freshness. 🏘️ Villages and local culture: Villages such as Resia, Chiusaforte and Venzone preserve traditions, dialects and architecture that tell the story of a borderland. The Resian culture is particularly suggestive, with music, dances and crafts unique throughout Europe. 👉 Tip: Take part in the Reschen Garlic Festival to discover typical products and traditional local dances. 🥘 Authentic and mountain flavors: The cuisine of the park is simple and tasty: bean and barley soups, gnocchi with wild herbs, aged alpine cheeses, smoked cured meats, and the unmistakable garlic of Resia. All accompanied by excellent wines from the eastern Collio. 👉 Tip: Taste formadi frant in a mountain trattoria: a strong flavor that tells the story of the Friulian tradition. The Julian Prealps Park is an open door to the truest nature, where every step offers deep silences and unexpected encounters with beauty.
