Maremma - Lazio

Guide: Mountains and Valleys, Lazio

Maremma Laziale – Lazio: lands of tuff, wild sea and ancient civilizations. The Maremma Laziale extends in the northernmost part of the region, between the Tyrrhenian coast and the hilly hinterland of Upper Lazio, in the province of Viterbo. It is a borderland, rugged and fascinating, shaped by the wind, the Mediterranean scrub, the cultivated fields and the Etruscan and Roman traces that emerge from the stone and the landscape. 🌿 Wild nature and authentic sea: The coast of the Lazio Maremma still retains intact and poorly urbanized stretches. Pine forests, sand dunes and cliffs alternate along the coast between Montalto di Castro, Pescia Romana and the promontory of Tarquinia Lido. Here the sea meets protected environments such as the Burano Nature Reserve and the salt pans, perfect for observing fauna. 👉 Tip: Walk along the free beach between Montalto and Marina di Pescia: you can enjoy the sea and nature in a quiet and uncrowded setting. 🏛️ Etruscan land and stone memory: The Lazio Maremma is deeply linked to the Etruscan civilization. Tarquinia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, houses one of the most important painted necropolises in Europe and one of the most significant archaeological museums in Italy. The territory of Tuscania, Canino and Vulci is also rich in tombs, monumental remains and archaeological routes immersed in nature. 👉 Tip: Visit the Monterozzi Necropolis in Tarquinia and combine it with a walk in the medieval historic center: a journey through history between rock art and stone palaces. 🚶 ♀️ Countryside, pastures and rural landscapes: The hinterland of the Lazio Maremma offers cultivated hills, open pastures, wheat fields and flocks in transhumance. Here you can breathe the authenticity of the agricultural landscape, still marked by the presence of the cowboys and ancient peasant practices. The secondary roads and paths cross a world made of silences and wide horizons. 👉 Tip: Cycle or drive along the panoramic road between Canino and Cellere: between gentle curves and isolated farmhouses, every glimpse tells of a lively and genuine Maremma. 🍷 Strong flavors and products of the land: The cuisine of the Lazio Maremma is rustic and intense. Grilled meats, sheep's cheeses, red wine (such as Aleatico di Gradoli), extra virgin olive oil and ancient legumes are the basis of local dishes. Markets and festivals offer the opportunity to taste typical products directly from the producers. 👉 Tip: Enjoy a lunch in a farmhouse near Canino: tagliatelle with wild boar, warm bread and new oil will give you back the authentic flavor of the Maremma countryside. 🛕 Spirituality and tuff villages: The volcanic stone also sculpts silent villages full of charm: Tuscania, Piansano, Cellere and Ischia di Castro preserve Romanesque churches, medieval walls and views that seem suspended in time. Perfect places for a slow visit, off the beaten track. 👉 Tip: Visit St. Peter's Basilica in Tuscania in the late afternoon: the warm light enhances the colors of the stone and creates an atmosphere of deep quiet. The Lazio Maremma is a straightforward and silent land, where every hill, every path and every village speak of nature, history and work: a landscape to be explored slowly, letting yourself be guided by the wind and light.
