Portofino Regional Natural Park

Guide: Natural Parks, Liguria

Portofino Regional Natural Park – Liguria: cliffs, silences and paths between the blue and the Mediterranean scrub. The Portofino Regional Natural Park extends over the promontory that separates Camogli, Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino. It is an environment of rare beauty, where the green of the scrub plunges into the sea through limestone cliffs, shady valleys and sunny ridges. Over 80 km of paths cross the park, offering unforgettable views and a constant feeling of balance between nature and silence. 🚶 ♀️ Ancient paths and open panoramas: The paths of the Park follow mule tracks, creuze and forest roads surrounded by holm oaks, maritime pines and abandoned terraces. Some paths follow the ridge, with open views of the Ligurian Sea, others descend to hidden coves and small rural churches. Each stroke tells of the deep bond between man and the landscape. 👉 Tip: Start from Ruta di Camogli and reach San Fruttuoso through the Passo del Bacio: the path is panoramic, the sea is always present and the arrival on the bay is a rare emotion. 🌿 Mediterranean scrub and biodiversity: The promontory is a concentrate of biodiversity: fragrant shrubs, spontaneous orchids, birds of prey in flight and endemic reptiles. The variations in altitude and exposure create different environments in just a few kilometres: from high-altitude pastures to vertical cliffs, from shady forests to sunny cliffs. 👉 Tip: Walk slowly and silently: the Park offers sudden encounters, such as a peregrine falcon in flight or the sudden rustle of a roe deer in the undergrowth. 🏘️ Villages and rural architecture: Along the paths you will encounter stone mills, votive shrines and small abandoned rural villages. The discreet presence of man can be read in the terraces, dry stone walls and the remains of ancient vegetable gardens. Camogli and Portofino, on the edge of the park, offer the welcome of Ligurian villages, but it is in the interior that the most authentic dimension of the promontory is perceived. 👉 Tip: Reach Pietre Strette and take a detour towards Nozarego: the landscape unexpectedly opens onto the Gulf of Tigullio with intense colors and scents. 🌊 Cliffs, bays and transparent waters: The south side of the Park overlooks the open sea with vertical walls and rocky inlets. The Bay of San Fruttuoso, reachable only on foot or by boat, houses the abbey and the famous Christ of the Abyss in the seabed. The coast is rugged, wild, untouched. 👉 Tip: Visit San Fruttuoso early in the morning or late in the afternoon: in the quietest moments you can listen to the breath of the sea and feel the stone still warm in the sun. 🍋 Simplicity in flavors and Ligurian identity: In the refuges and villages on the edge of the park you can enjoy simple and real dishes: vegetable pies, wood-fired bread, local cheeses and white wine from the hills. The cuisine is light, tasty, linked to the land and the sea. 👉 Tip: After the hike, stop in Camogli for a cheese focaccia and a fresh glass of Vermentino – the best way to end the day. The Portofino Park is a place where nature meets history, silence accompanies the journey and the sea is not just a background, but a living presence. A promontory to be experienced slowly, step by step.
