Gola del Furlo Nature Reserve

Guide: Natural Parks, Marche

Gola del Furlo Nature Reserve – Marche: a canyon of wonders between nature, history and millenary silences. Nestled between the mountains of Monte Pietralata and Monte Paganuccio, the Gola del Furlo Nature Reserve is one of the most spectacular naturalistic jewels of the Marche region. This deep canyon carved by the Candigliano river offers dizzying views, imposing limestone walls and a very rich biodiversity, just a few kilometers from Acqualagna, home of the truffle. 🧭 Scenic trails and wilderness: The reserve is crisscrossed by numerous hiking trails suitable for all levels, winding through woods, peaks and natural balconies overlooking the gorge. Among the best known, the Furlo path and the ascent to Monte Pietralata, with spectacular views of the valley. 👉 Tip: Head to the panoramic terrace of the Belvedere to admire the gorge from above and, with a bit of luck, catch a glimpse of the golden eagle in flight. 🦅 Protected fauna and large birds of prey: The Furlo Gorge is a paradise for birdwatching: the golden eagle, the peregrine falcon and the raven nest here. The canyon's microclimate is also home to fallow deer, roe deer, wild cats, and diverse flora ranging from ferns to rock plants. 👉 Tip: Bring binoculars and visit the environmental education center: you will be able to discover the traces of the animals and the rarest plant species of the reserve. 🏛️ A journey through history: The Furlo Gorge is crossed by the historic Via Flaminia, still visible in some sections. Among the curiosities, the famous Roman tunnel dug into the rock at the time of Emperor Vespasian, an engineering work that fascinates young and old. 👉 Tip: Take the historic path along the river to walk exactly where the Romans passed, between ancient tunnels and unique views of the gorge. 🍃 Relaxation, taste and nearby villages: After the excursion, it is pleasant to stop in the surroundings to savor the typical products: black and white truffles, local cheeses, honey, cold cuts and sincere wines from Montefeltro. Also not to be missed is a walk in Acqualagna or Fossombrone. 👉 Tip: If you are in the area in autumn, don't miss the National Truffle Fair in Acqualagna: a riot of scents and flavors of the earth. At the Furlo Gorge, nature tells ancient stories between walls sculpted by time, and silence becomes the perfect companion for those seeking wonder.
