Marmolada – Veneto: glacier, endless views and the queen of the Dolomites within easy reach.
The Marmolada, with its 3,343 meters, is the highest peak in the Dolomites. From the Veneto side, which can be reached from Malga Ciapela (Rocca Pietore, BL), you can access the mountain in all seasons, including glaciers, vertical walls and spectacular views of the entire Dolomite arc. It is a popular destination for hikers, skiers, mountaineers and history buffs. 🏔️ A panorama overlooking the Dolomites:
From the panoramic terrace of Punta Rocca, which can be reached by the Marmolada Move To The Top cable car, the view sweeps 360 °: Pale di San Martino, Civetta, Pelmo, Sella, Catinaccio. The view is among the widest and most spectacular in the entire Alps.
👉 Tip: Climb early in the morning to avoid queues and find better light for photos: the first run from Malga Ciapela offers silence and clear skies. 🧭 Excursions and high-altitude routes:
The Marmolada offers high-altitude trails, historic via ferratas and glacial routes reserved for experienced mountaineers. For everyone, the path that leads to Lake Fedaia and the path at the foot of the south face are ideal for walks with a view. In summer, guided hikes on the glacier with crampons and a mountain guide are organized.
👉 Tip: If you are experienced, take the West Ridge Via Ferrata: panoramic and challenging, it offers a memorable climb to the top. 🎿 Skiing on the Marmolada and Dolomiti Superski:
In winter, the Marmolada is one of the highest points of the Dolomiti Superski. Its long and panoramic slopes start from the top and descend to Malga Ciapela. Connected to the Arabba-Porta Vescovo area, it is part of the Sella Ronda.
👉 Tip: Descend the La Bellunese slope: over 12 km of continuous descent between glaciers, walls and woods, with a view of the eastern Dolomites. 🪖 History and memory on the glacier:
During the First World War, the Marmolada was the scene of clashes and hosted the famous "city of ice" built by the Austro-Hungarians in the belly of the glacier. Today it is possible to visit the Marmolada Great War Museum 3000 m, located at the arrival of the cable car.
👉 Tip: Spend at least an hour at the museum at high altitude: touching, well-curated, with multimedia exhibits and authentic historical memorabilia. 🏡 Where to sleep at the foot of the Marmolada:
The starting point for exploring the Veneto side is Malga Ciapela, a hamlet of Rocca Pietore. Nearby you will find hotels, refuges and B&Bs surrounded by greenery and well connected to the cable car. The town of Alleghe, a short distance away, is also an excellent base.
👉 Tip: Stay in a refuge or hotel at Malga Ciapela to be the first on the cable car and enjoy the sunrise over the queen of the Dolomites.
The Marmolada is a monumental mountain: it combines sport, nature and memory in a high-altitude experience that leaves its mark in every season.
