Como is located in the southwestern part of the Lake of the same name. Is 201 meters s.m. in a plain surrounded by Mount Brunate, from Monte Olimpino and from barracks. Because of the presence of beautiful Lake Como is a popular tourist destination. The city center is situated on the lake promenade, a short walk from piazza del Duomo, one of the largest cathedrals of Upper Italy. The old town still has the look of the original Roman Fort, with well preserved medieval walls and large towers (Gate Tower, Tower Gattoni, San Vitale). Notable are the churches of s. Abbondio and s. Fedele, the heart of the walled city, while masterpieces are the Rationalist buildings erected from comasco Giuseppe Terragni: the ex-Casa del Fascio, the War Memorial, asylum Sant'Elia and the Novocomum. Nearby, the Volta temple houses some memorabilia of the scientist Alessandro Volta, another illustrious comasco, inventor of the electric battery. Villa Olmo is home to art exhibitions of high standard while the funicular that connects the city to mount Brunate completes the itinerary of the visit. Are classic boat trips on the Lake.
