Sondrio lies in the northern part of Lombardy and is located at 307 metres above sea level in an area called media Valtellina. Its origins date back to the Longobards and among the most interesting to visit are the Town Hall, the Collegiata and nearby the sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna della Sassella. Also very interesting the Valtellinese Museum which houses other archaeological material. The Church of Saints gervasius and protasius, one of the oldest of Valtellina, was at the head of a large parish and in the 12th century was collegiate. The Ligariana Tower is in the heart of Sondrio and is both civic Tower steeple of the collegiate church. It was built during the construction of the collegiate church. It rises in the average Valtellina at the confluence of the Mallero River with the Adda River, the gateway to the Valmalenco, under the massif of Corna Mara. The town is the main centre of the area.
