Lodi's provincial capital of the region and is 87 meters above sea level on the right bank of the river Adda. Originally it was a Roman colony but in 1100 was destroyed by Milan and subsequently due to its strategic position on the river Po was rebuilt by Barbarossa. Among the artistic and historical monuments to visit remember surely the Cathedral, the Broletto, the sanctuary of the Incoronata and numerous Gothic churches among which the most important is the Church of San Francesco. There are also churches and palaces in Rococo style including the Bishop's Palace and the Church and the Palace of San Felipe. On 19 January of each year is the Festival of the Patron Saint Bassianus. Religious celebrations open the previous evening at the Cathedral, where the Diocesan vigil presided by the Bishop. The public holiday itself has instead beginning the morning of 19 January, with the civic authorities parade from palazzo Broletto to the Cathedral, accompanied by figures in medieval costume; in the crypt, which houses the remains of the Saint, are pronounced the speeches of the Mayor and the Bishop.
