Val Sabbia

Guide: Mountains and Valleys, Lombardia

Val Sabbia – Lombardy: woods, villages and lakes between the Brescian Prealps and Lake Idro. Val Sabbia extends in the eastern part of the province of Brescia, between Lake Garda and the mountains of Val Trompia, with Lake Idro as a natural landmark. It is a long and varied valley, which alternates hilly areas, waterways, small historic centers and paths that climb towards the pre-Alpine peaks. 🏞️ Hiking and lush nature: The woods of Val Sabbia offer routes suitable for hikers of all levels, including chestnut groves, mule tracks and panoramic points. Along the ridges you will encounter ancient pastures, springs and remains of fortifications, with open views of the surrounding valleys. 👉 Tip: Climb Mount Stino from Capovalle: along the way you will find trenches from the Great War and, from the top, a spectacular view of Lake Idro. 🌊 Lake Idro and outdoor activities: Lake Idro, less crowded than Lake Garda, is the tourist heart of the valley: ideal for water sports, canoeing, windsurfing or simply relaxing on its tree-lined shores. Around the lake there are paths, equipped areas and picturesque villages such as Anfo and Bagolino. 👉 Tip: Take a walk along the Vantone–Vesta path: it runs along the lake and offers peaceful views of water, greenery and silence. 🏘️ Alpine culture and authentic villages: Val Sabbia preserves traditions strongly linked to the mountains: iron craftsmanship, patron saint festivals, woodworking and local dialects. Villages such as Bagolino, with its arcades, fountains and historic carnival, are among the most characteristic. 👉 Tip: Visit Bagolino in winter: the Carnival with traditional masks and ancient dances is one of the most evocative events in the Italian Alps. 🥘 Rustic cuisine and typical products: The dishes of the valley reflect the simplicity of peasant cuisine: alpine cheeses, smoked cured meats, polenta with game, potato gnocchi and desserts made with yellow flour or chestnuts. Bagòss, a hard cheese flavored with saffron, is the gastronomic symbol of the area. 👉 Tip: Stop at a mountain hut near Bagolino to buy Bagòss directly from the producer: each wheel has a story made up of patience, seasons and high pastures. Val Sabbia is a sober but rich territory, where water meets rock, the paths reveal silence and the flavors speak of real mountains.
