Campo Imperatore - Gran Sasso Massif

Guide: Mountains and Valleys, Abruzzo

Campo Imperatore – The little Tibet of Abruzzo, between sky and plateaus. Campo Imperatore is one of the most spectacular places in the Apennines and in the whole of Italy. Located on the plateau at almost 2,200 meters above sea level, in the heart of the Gran Sasso Massif, it is known as the "Tibet of Abruzzo" for its vastness, majestic views and wild charm. It is an icon of the most authentic Abruzzo. 🏔️ A landscape that leaves you breathless: The plateau stretches for kilometers between imposing peaks, high-altitude pastures, grazing herds and seasonal blooms. In summer it is a paradise for hikers and photographers, in winter it is covered in snow and turns into a surreal expanse. 👉 Tip: Climb to the Duca degli Abruzzi Refuge for a panoramic view of the entire plateau and the Corno Grande, the highest peak of the Apennines. 🚡 Accessibility and Adventure: Campo Imperatore can be reached by car or cable car from Fonte Cerreto (Assergi), which offers a spectacular journey to the sky in just a few minutes. It is a starting point for trekking, mountaineering, mountain biking and winter sports. 👉 Tip: Take the cable car early in the morning to avoid the crowds and admire the scenery that opens up with every meter of climbing. ⛷️ Snow, skiing and history: In winter, Campo Imperatore becomes a small high-altitude ski resort. Here you can also breathe history: the ancient Hotel Campo Imperatore was Mussolini's prison in 1943, and is now a place full of charm and memory. 👉 Tip: After a ski descent, enter the hotel-museum for a dip in the history of Italy... with a view of the sky. 🍝 Mountain food and huts: Refuges and refreshment points offer simple and robust cuisine: lentils, stews, skewers, alpine cheeses and rustic desserts. Perfect for refreshment after a hike or snowshoeing. 👉 Tip: Don't miss a lunch at Rifugio Mucciante, along the plain, where you can grill meat yourself on an outdoor barbecue. 🌠 Stars and silence: Campo Imperatore is also home to the Astronomical Observatory. Thanks to the absence of light pollution, the sky is filled with stars at night, offering an extraordinary spectacle for amateur astronomers and dreamers. 👉 Tip: Stay until the evening to experience the sunset and see the Milky Way as you've never seen it before. 🛌 Sleeping at high altitude: It is possible to spend the night directly on the plateau in spartan huts or at high altitude. Alternatively, you can stay in the basic villages such as Assergi, Castel del Monte or Santo Stefano di Sessanio. 👉 Tip: For the full experience, choose to sleep in a hut and wake up at dawn above the clouds. Campo Imperatore is a journey into the silence, vastness and essential beauty of the mountain. A place that stays inside.
