Lake Omodeo

Guide: Lakes, Sardegna

Lake Omodeo – Sardinia: vast waters, ancient shores and majestic quiet in the heart of the island. Lake Omodeo is the largest artificial basin in Sardinia, extending between the and the first heights of Barigadu and Guilcier. Built in the early twentieth century and enlarged in 1997, it retains the wide and solemn charm of large water spaces. Its uneven banks alternate with cultivated hills, pastures, wooded areas and submerged ruins that emerge when the water level drops. 🌾 An expanse of water that breathes with the earth: The landscape around the lake is quiet and airy. The water stretches in tongues that penetrate the valleys, drawing changing contours. Wild goats, cormorants, herons and horses graze free between embankments, paths and promontories. Here nature has space and time to tell its story calmly. 👉 Tip: Stop near Sorradile or Bidonì at sunset: the grazing light lights up the waters and sculpts the hills against the light. 🚣 Peaceful explorations and inner landscapes: Lake Omodeo is perfect for canoeing, walks along the scenic paths and moments of absolute rest. Some sections can only be reached on foot or by bike, offering wide and solitary views. In the surrounding area there are equipped areas, small marinas and natural viewpoints. 👉 Tip: Plan a day between Ghilarza and Ardauli, alternating exploration and relaxation on the less traveled shores of the lake. 🏞️ Archaeology, disappeared villages and submerged memory: The waters of the lake have submerged ancient villages, such as Zuri (partly rebuilt on a hill), and preserve Roman and Nuragic remains. On the surrounding heights there are country churches, domus de janas and nuraghi that dominate the horizon. The territory retains a deep relationship with history and with the signs of rural civilization. 👉 Tip: Visit the Church of San Pietro di Zuri, relocated stone by stone after the reservoir: a rare gesture of respect and reconstruction. 🍴 Country flavors and robust wines: The local cuisine reflects the agricultural vocation of the area: wild chicory, pistoccu bread, intense cheeses, stewed sheep and handmade pasta. All accompanied by Cannonau and Bovale produced in the vineyards of Mandrolisai and Barigadu. 👉 Tip: Taste a plate of malloreddus with sausage sauce with a glass of red wine from Guilcier: the taste of the terroir in purity. 🎉 Living communities and rites of slow time: The villages overlooking the lake organize seasonal events, agricultural fairs, days dedicated to wine and transhumance. The welcome is simple, generous, and often linked to patron saint festivals and religious celebrations that take place in churchyards, squares and sheep tracks. It is a direct contact with an internal and sincere Sardinia. 👉 Tip: Attend the feast of Santa Maria di Ossolo in summer: the celebration takes place on the heights, overlooking the lake and the scent of myrtle in the air. Lake Omodeo does not look for the scene: it welcomes those who know how to stop, listen and observe. Its wide waters take the gaze far away and leave room for the silence of the deepest Sardinia.
