Pizzo Cane Nature Reserve Pizzo Trigna and Mazzamuto Cave

Guide: Natural Parks, Sicilia

Pizzo Cane, Pizzo Trigna and Mazzamuto Cave Nature Reserve – Sicily: rocky ridges, hidden woods and caves of silence in the valley of the Milicia river. Located in the hinterland of the province of Palermo, the Pizzo Cane, Pizzo Trigna and Grotta Mazzamuto Nature Reserve protects one of the most fascinating karst landscapes in northern Sicily. Among impervious gorges, vertical cliffs and Mediterranean woods, you will discover a territory that is still little known, rich in biodiversity, spectacular views and geological history. ⛰️ Limestone peaks and breathtaking views: Pizzo Cane (1,242 m) and Pizzo Trigna (1,128 m) rise sheer above the valley of the Milicia river, offering sweeping views that embrace the Tyrrhenian coast up to the Madonie. The slopes are home to holm oaks, oaks and strawberry trees, while on the ridges the vegetation becomes sparse and the silence deep. 👉 Tip: Take the path that connects the Caccamo area to the rocky ridges for a circular hike with continuous views of the woods and the sea. 🪨 Caves, gorges and karst phenomena: The area is characterized by numerous caves, among which the Mazzamuto Cave stands out, frequented since prehistoric times. The cavities are home to bats, stalactites, and unique microfaunas. The gorges carved over time by water hide springs, pools and landscapes with an almost primordial appearance. 👉 Tip: Join a guided caving excursion to safely explore caves and underground environments full of geological charm. 🦅 Wildlife and unspoiled nature: The reserve is a refuge for numerous protected species: among the most emblematic are the chough, the red kite, the wild cat and the kestrel. The variety of environments favors a surprising biodiversity, with seasonal blooms and silent fauna. 👉 Tip: In spring, walk the highest paths with a nature guide: you will be able to spot birds of prey and recognize wild aromatic plants. 🏡 Hospitality and local flavors: The villages near the reserve, such as Caccamo and Casteldaccia, offer rural B&Bs, houses surrounded by greenery and traditional farmhouses. The cuisine is that of the hills of Palermo: tumminìa bread, sheep's milk cheeses, local meats and homemade preserves. 👉 Tip: After the trek, stop at a family-run trattoria to enjoy typical dishes with a view of the wooded valleys of the area. Pizzo Cane and Pizzo Trigna preserve a vertical and authentic Sicily, made up of deep silences, wide views and nature still free to breathe.
