Vendicari Wildlife Oasis Oriented Nature Reserve

Guide: Natural Parks, Sicilia

Vendicari Wildlife Oasis Nature Reserve – Sicily: salt pans, lagoons and pristine beaches among migrations, ruins and marine silences. Between Noto and Marzamemi, the Vendicari Wildlife Oasis Nature Reserve is a unique coastal ecosystem, where salt marshes, dunes, marshes, golden beaches and ancient salt pans alternate. The Oasis is a crucial stopping point for migratory birds flying between Europe and Africa, but also a place of great scenic and archaeological interest. 🦩 Migratory birds and wetlands: Vendicari is one of the most important wetlands in Italy for birdwatching. Pink flamingos, herons, storks, black-winged stilts and spoonbills are just some of the more than 250 species spotted each year. The marshes of Vendicari, Cuba, Roveto and Arangio are ideal habitats for resting and nesting. 👉 Tip: Bring binoculars and walk along the equipped paths: the observation towers allow you to admire the birds without disturbing them. 🌊 Wild beaches and coasts: Within the reserve there are some of the most intact beaches in Sicily: Calamosche, Eloro and Marianelli. Between fine sand, crystal clear waters and stretches of cliffs, these beaches are not served by establishments, but retain their natural charm intact. 👉 Tip: Visit Calamosche early in the morning or at sunset: the golden light enhances the bay and the experience is even more impressive without crowds. 🏺 Historical ruins between salt and sea: The Oasis houses the remains of the Bourbon tuna fishery of Vendicari, with its coastal tower and stone columns that tell centuries of tuna fishing. Nearby are also the ruins of the Greco-Roman city of Eloro and ancient necropolises carved into the rock. 👉 Tip: Explore the ruins of the tuna fishery and the Swabian tower at your leisure: the atmosphere suspended between nature and archaeology is one of the highlights of the entire reserve. 🏡 Where to sleep and what to enjoy: In the countryside around Vendicari, between Noto and Pachino, you will find farms, organic farmhouses and rural houses surrounded by carob and almond trees. The local cuisine is simple and seasonal: Pachino cherry tomatoes, oily fish, couscous and almond and dried fig desserts. 👉 Tip: Look for a family-run site near Marzamemi: you can combine rural relaxation with an evening walk in the seaside village. Vendicari is a place where nature tells its story without filters: sea, silence and migrations meet in a fragile balance to be experienced with respect and wonder.
