Le Montagne delle Felci e dei Porri Nature Reserve

Guide: Natural Parks, Sicilia

Le Montagne delle Felci e dei Porri Nature Reserve – Sicily: volcanic forests, high-altitude silences and views that open onto the blue of the Aeolian Islands. On the green island of Salina, the Le Montagne delle Felci e dei Porri Nature Reserve protects two ancient extinct volcanoes and one of the most luxuriant wooded areas of the archipelago. A place that alternates panoramic heights, Mediterranean vegetation and paths that climb through chestnut trees, ferns and breathtaking views of the nearby islands. 🌿 Between green craters and lush vegetation: Monte Fossa delle Felci, the highest point of the Aeolian Islands with its 962 meters, is wrapped in a thick mantle of ferns, pines and chestnut trees. Its slopes are a botanical paradise that changes its face with the seasons, while Monte dei Porri offers shorter but equally evocative itineraries. 👉 Tip: Climb to the top early in the morning to breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the grazing light on the Tyrrhenian Sea, with Stromboli and Panarea seemingly suspended over the horizon. 🦅 Nature and fauna at high altitude: The reserve is home to a rich birdlife, including the Eleonora's falcon, the lesser kestrel and several migratory species that stop on the peaks during their seasonal movements. Hedgehogs, wild rabbits and dormice also live in the wooded areas, as well as a surprising variety of insects and butterflies. 👉 Tip: Bring binoculars and stop along the ridge: in the spring months, the passage of migratory birds is a sight not to be missed. 🥾 Immersive trails and Aeolian panoramas: The well-marked hiking routes are suitable for different levels of preparation. The climb to Monte Fossa requires commitment but offers priceless views of all the Aeolian Islands. The shorter itineraries, such as the one that crosses Monte dei Porri, allow a regenerating walk between shade and scents of undergrowth. 👉 Tip: Wear sturdy shoes and bring water supplies, especially in summer - there are no springs along the trails, but the views will reward every step. 🏡 Hospitality and flavors of Salina: In the villages of the island – Malfa, Leni, Santa Marina – you can find accommodation surrounded by nature, among Malvasia vineyards, caper gardens and terraces overlooking the sea. The hospitality is authentic, made up of small gestures, intense flavors and regenerating slowness. 👉 Tip: After the hike, treat yourself to an aperitif with dry Malvasia and local specialties: a simple table, rooted and fragrant like the island itself. Walking on the Ferns and Leeks Mountains is a way to discover the green soul of Salina, between silent woods and skies that open up to the sea.
