Monte Capanne

Guide: Mountains and Valleys, Toscana

Monte Capanne – Tuscany: paths between sea and sky on the greenest island of the Tuscan Archipelago. Monte Capanne is the highest peak on the Island of Elba and in the entire Tuscan Archipelago, with its 1,019 meters above sea level. From its top, on clear days, you can see all the islands of the archipelago, Corsica and the Tuscan coast. It is an extraordinary place where sea, mountains and Mediterranean nature come together in a unique experience. 🥾 Panoramic hikes in the clouds: Monte Capanne is one of the most spectacular excursion destinations in Tuscany. You can go up on foot along paths immersed in the Mediterranean scrub, or in a few minutes with the historic panoramic cable car from Marciana. From the summit, the panorama is vast and breathtaking, between sea, sky and rocky ridges. 👉 Tip: If you love walking, take Path 101 from Marciana: challenging but surrounded by unspoiled nature and postcard views. 🌿 Wilderness and biodiversity: The Capanne massif is part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park and is home to an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna. Among chestnut trees, holm oaks, brooms and granite outcrops, there are mouflons, peregrine falcons and many species of rare butterflies. The woods offer shade and coolness even in summer. 👉 Tip: Bring binoculars with you: you may spot mouflons or birds of prey during the ascent. 🏘️ Historic villages between stone and sky: At the foot of Monte Capanne there are charming villages such as Marciana, one of the oldest on the island, Poggio, famous for its water sources, and Pomonte, overlooking the sea. Here you can still breathe the most authentic Elban atmosphere, among stone alleys, chestnut trees and panoramic terraces. 👉 Tip: Visit Marciana Alta and climb to the Pisan Fortress for a perfect view of the north side of the island. 🍋 Elba flavours between sea and mountains: The Capanne area combines the flavours of the mountains with those of the coast: goat's cheeses, scrub honey, chestnuts, but also fresh fish, bonito and fragrant wines such as the Procanico dell'Elba. Rustic, seasonal and land-bound cuisine. 👉 Tip: Try a dinner in a trattoria in Poggio: tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms, croutons with local honey and a glass of Aleatico to end on a sweet note. 🛏️ Where to stay: In the surroundings of Monte Capanne you will find panoramic B&Bs, farmhouses among the chestnut trees and small hotels in the historic villages. Many facilities offer guided excursions, e-bike rental, themed dinners and wellness packages surrounded by nature. 👉 Tip: Stay in Marciana for direct access to the trails and cable car, in a quiet and authentic setting. From Monte Capanne, Elba can be discovered from above: between sea and sky, every step offers silence, beauty and freedom.
