Tuscan Archipelago National Park

Guide: Natural Parks, Toscana

Tuscan Archipelago National Park – Tuscany: precious islands, marine nature and unspoiled landscapes in the heart of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The Tuscan Archipelago National Park embraces a group of seven main islands – Elba, Giglio, Capraia, Montecristo, Pianosa, Giannutri and Gorgona – and several smaller islets, distributed between the Tuscan coast and Corsica. It is the largest marine park in Europe and protects an extraordinary environmental heritage, made up of biodiversity, transparent seabeds and landscapes suspended between sky and sea. 🌊 Clear waters and protected seabed: The waters of the Archipelago are home to meadows of posidonia, corals, submerged wrecks and sea caves. They are the habitat of sea turtles, dolphins and numerous species of fish. Boat excursions, diving and snorkeling take place in regulated areas, in full respect of nature. 👉 Tip: Depart from Porto Azzurro for a boat tour with a snorkeling stop at Capo Sant'Andrea: intense colors and rich seabed. 🏝️ Islands with different characters, all to be discovered: Each island has its own identity: Elba mixes beaches, paths and history; Giglio fascinates with its coves and fortified village; Capraia is harsh and fragrant with wind. The most remote, such as Montecristo, Giannutri and Pianosa, can only be visited by reservation, to preserve their environmental balance and extraordinaryness. 👉 Tip: If you are looking for an authentic place without crowds, explore Capraia on foot: the island offers silence, paths and views overlooking the blue. 🥾 Hiking and active nature: There are numerous trekking routes and outdoor activities, especially on Elba, Giglio and Capraia. You walk through Mediterranean scrub, vineyards, coastal towers and views of the sea. There is also no shortage of kayak tours, horseback riding and boat trips. 👉 Tip: Discover the Grande Traversata Elbana: a multi-day hiking itinerary through the reliefs of the island with spectacular views. 🦎 Unique biodiversity and environments to be protected: The park protects a variety of terrestrial and marine habitats of great value. Endemic and rare species live here, such as the Corsican gull, the Sardinian discoglossus and numerous native plants. The smaller islands, less accessible, are true sanctuaries of biodiversity. 👉 Tip: Book a visit to Pianosa or Giannutri in advance: limited access, but authentic and extraordinary experiences. 🛏️ Where to stay: You can stay on Elba, Giglio and Capraia, which offer hotels, B&Bs, campsites and farmhouses. The other islands do not provide overnight stays, but are easily accessible from the coast or with organized day tours. 👉 Tip: Choose a base on the Island of Elba: frequent connections and the possibility of excursions to the other islands of the archipelago. The Tuscan Archipelago National Park is a journey between different islands, each with its own voice: between rocks, wind and sea, nature tells deep and ancient stories.
