Lake Braies

Guide: Lakes, Trentino Alto Adige

Lake Braies – Trentino-Alto Adige: emerald water, Dolomites and relaxation at high altitude. Lake Braies is located at 1,496 meters above sea level, in Val di Braies, a side valley of the Val Pusteria. It is one of the most photographed and visited alpine lakes in the Dolomites, thanks to the crystalline color of its waters, its position at the foot of the Croda del Becco and the evocative mountain atmosphere that surrounds it. 📍 What to see in the surroundings: In addition to the lake, you can visit the woods that surround it, the alpine pastures along the paths and the small chapel on the shore. The landscape is perfect for a scenic walk, also suitable for families. In summer you can rent the characteristic wooden boats to explore the lake from the center. 👉 Tip: Leave early in the morning to avoid crowding, especially in the summer months. The hours of daylight in the early morning give the most beautiful reflections. 🥾 How to get there and walking routes: The lake can be reached by car, bus or shuttle from Villabassa, Monguelfo and Dobbiaco. In the high season (July-September) access by car is regulated and requires reservation. The complete tour of the lake is an easy path, about 4 km long, which can be covered in an hour. 👉 Tip: Wear comfortable shoes: the route is easy but with some sections on roots and stones, especially on the western side. 🍽️ Where to eat and sleep: In the surrounding area there are huts, hotels, alpine huts and farmhouses that offer typical South Tyrolean dishes: dumplings, bacon, strudel and alpine products. The ideal area to stop is Val di Braies, but Dobbiaco and San Candido are also excellent starting points. 👉 Tip: Book in advance if you want to sleep directly near the lake, especially in the summer months. Lake Braies is one of the symbolic places of the Dolomites: easy to reach, spectacular in every season, perfect for an excursion through nature and postcard landscapes.
