Riviera di Ulisse Regional Park

Guide: Natural Parks, Lazio

Riviera di Ulisse Regional Park – Lazio: promontories, secret beaches and ancient myths between sky and sea. The Riviera di Ulisse Regional Park develops along the southern coast of Lazio, between the municipalities of Gaeta, Formia, Sperlonga and Minturno. Established to protect coastal environments of extraordinary beauty, it contains promontories, sea caves, dunes, coastal towers and archaeological remains immersed in the Mediterranean scrub. A landscape between sea and myth, suspended between nature and history. 🌊 Rocky headlands and protected beaches: The park includes coastal areas such as Monte Orlando in Gaeta, Punta della Guardia and Punta Cetarola in Sperlonga, and the Gianola Promontory in Formia. These limestone reliefs descend sheer to the sea, protecting small pebble or golden sand beaches that can only be reached on foot or by boat. 👉 Tip: Reach the Spiaggia dei 40 Remi by kayak or by sea from Gaeta: a hidden cove between cliffs and transparent waters, ideal for snorkeling and silence. 🌿 Mediterranean scrub and coastal biodiversity: Along the paths of the park alternate Aleppo pines, holm oaks, myrtles, strawberry trees and brooms. The vegetation climbs the rocks and perfumes the air with wild essences. In spring, wild orchids bloom, while in the cooler months migratory birds can be spotted on the Tyrrhenian routes. 👉 Tip: Walk the Cliff Path in Monte Orlando: panoramic views, karst caves and open sea accompany every step. 🏛️ Archaeology on the sea and ancient traces: The park also protects important archaeological sites such as the Mausoleum of Lucius Munatius Plancus, the Bourbon fortifications of Monte Orlando, the Villa of Tiberius and the evocative Cave of Sperlonga, an ancient imperial banquet hall with mythological statues inspired by Ulysses. 👉 Tip: Visit the National Archaeological Museum of Sperlonga and be surprised by the sculptural group of Ulysses and Polyphemus: art, myth and sea in a single glance. 🚶 ♀️ Sea view trails and nature walks: The park offers a dense network of hiking trails, often overlooking the sea. The itineraries cross pine forests, ancient coastal towers and sea caves, allowing you to explore one of the most intact coasts of Lazio on foot. 👉 Tip: Follow the Battery Trail in Gianola: between military remains, the scent of salt and glimpses of the coast, it is one of the most evocative routes to admire the sunset. 🌅 A coast to be experienced slowly: The Riviera of Ulysses is an area to be discovered without haste, between baths in the coves, silent walks and cultural visits. The presence of Saracen towers, rock hermitages, Roman remains and small seaside villages enriches each stage with different stories and atmospheres. 👉 Tip: After the excursion, stop in the upper village of Gaeta to enjoy an octopus tiella with a view of the Gulf: flavor and landscape come together in a single emotion. The Riviera of Ulysses is a continuous encounter between wild nature and ancient memory. Here the sea speaks through the winds, the rocks tell stories and each cove invites you to stop and look deeper.
