Elvo Valley

Guide: Mountains and Valleys, Piemonte

Elvo Valley – Piedmont: stone, water and discreet views between Biella and Serra Morenica. The Elvo Valley develops in the north of Piedmont, between the Biella area and the Serra d'Ivrea, following the course of the Elvo stream. It is a small valley, made up of stone villages, chestnut woods and little-traveled paths. The landscape alternates soft reliefs with more rugged stretches, with a sober but intense nature, capable of surprising in every season. 🏞️ Between mountains and hills: The valley starts from the reliefs of the Monte Mars Nature Reserve and slopes down towards the plain. The environment changes rapidly: you go from high pastures and beech forests to morainic areas, rich in watercourses and springs. The Elvo stream, which gives its name to the valley, flows clearly, creating cool and silent corners. 👉 Tip: Reach the Devil's Bridge near Sordevolo: a legendary place surrounded by greenery and quiet. 🏘️ Stone villages and local traditions: The villages of the Elvo Valley – including Sordevolo, Muzzano, Graglia and Sagliano Micca – retain their original appearance: stone houses, stone roofs, small oratories and mule tracks that connect the villages. Life here flows slowly, linked to the rhythms of the mountains and village festivals. 👉 Tip: Visit Sordevolo in summer, when the famous Passion is staged: a popular theatrical show that involves the whole town. 🌲 Trails and discreet nature: The valley is crossed by numerous itineraries suitable for trekking and mountain biking. Some climb towards the Upper Elvo Valley and the pastures of Monte Mucrone, others wind through woods and panoramic hills. Along the way you will encounter votive chapels, old mountain pastures and hidden corners. 👉 Tip: The Path of the White Stones offers a relaxing walk and panoramic points over the Serra and the Biella plain. 🥖 Rustic flavours and mountain products: The gastronomy of the valley is linked to the Alpine tradition: polenta, alpine cheeses, sausages and chestnut-based desserts. Some farms keep historic crops such as ottofile corn alive and offer tastings by reservation. 👉 Tip: Stop at an inn in Graglia to taste miassa, a kind of thin focaccia cooked on a griddle and served with cold cuts or fresh cheese. ⛪ Places of spirituality and silence: The Sanctuary of Graglia, located on a natural balcony in the mountains, is one of the most representative places in the valley. A place of pilgrimage and contemplation, it offers a wide view of the territory and a cozy and meditative atmosphere. 👉 Tip: On the way up to the sanctuary, make a stop at the small chapel of Calvary, nestled in the woods and easily accessible on foot. The Elvo Valley is a silent and concrete land, where the mountain does not flaunt itself, but accompanies every step with discretion and memory.
