Pigelleto Nature Reserve

Guide: Natural Parks, Toscana

Pigelleto Nature Reserve – Tuscany: deep woods, regenerating silence and biodiversity on the slopes of Mount Amiata. The Pigelleto Nature Reserve is located in southern Tuscany, in the municipality of Piancastagnaio, at the foot of Mount Amiata. It is a protected area of about 1,000 hectares that preserves one of the most beautiful beech forests in the region, along with cork oaks, chestnut trees and a rich fauna. Its name derives from the ancient activity of charcoal production, called "pigello". 🌳 Mixed forests and shaded trails: The paths within the reserve wind through dense woods and panoramic heights. The paths are well marked and accessible, ideal for relaxing walks, nature trekking and educational activities. The environment is cool even in summer, with carpets of leaves, moss and lichens. 👉 Tip: Follow the path to Poggio Roccone: a panoramic point from which you can embrace the entire Val d'Orcia up to the Maremma. 🦉 Protected nature and silences to listen to: The reserve is home to numerous wildlife species, including roe deer, badgers, buzzards, tawny owls and eagle owls. The context, silent and not very frequented, favors the observation of fauna and complete immersion in the quiet of the forest. 👉 Tip: Bring binoculars and walk the trails at sunrise or late afternoon to increase your chances of spotting. 🌿 Environmental education and thematic paths: Inside the reserve there is the Pigelleto Visitor Center, which organizes activities for schools, guided excursions and environmental education workshops. An ideal place to get closer to nature in a conscious and respectful way. 👉 Tip: Take part in an evening guided tour in the summer months: among fireflies, stars and the sounds of the forest, the Pigelleto reveals a special charm. 🛏️ Where to stay: In the surroundings of the reserve you can find rustic farmhouses, mountain huts, B&Bs surrounded by greenery and stone houses in the nearby villages. Piancastagnaio is the ideal starting point, well connected and full of atmosphere. 👉 Tip: Choose accommodation in the historic center of Piancastagnaio to combine nature, culture and typical cuisine of the Amiata. In this corner of the woods, time seems suspended between the leaves: the Pigelleto offers a true contact with nature and with oneself.
