Marsiliana State Nature Reserve

Guide: Natural Parks, Toscana

Marsiliana State Nature Reserve – Tuscany: Mediterranean scrub, silent valleys and biodiversity preserved in the inland Maremma. The Marsiliana State Nature Reserve is located in the territory of the municipality of Manciano, between the Albegna river and the hills overlooking the sea. It is an extensive and little-populated protected area, characterized by mixed woods, holm oaks, clearings, waterways and Mediterranean scrub. A wild and authentic place, where nature expresses itself in silent but vital forms. 🌳 Natural landscapes and unspoiled forests: The heart of the reserve is made up of thermophilic forests and evergreen vegetation, which create a varied ecological mosaic. Here you will find turkey oaks, holm oaks, cork oaks, aromatic shrubs and wetlands that favor the presence of numerous fauna species. Access to the reserve is limited, to ensure its protection and conservation. 👉 Tip: Contact the forest management body's contact persons to participate in authorized guided tours, often related to educational or research projects. 🦉 Wildlife and biodiversity to observe: The Marsiliana is a refuge for wild boars, fallow deer, roe deer, foxes and small birds of prey, along with numerous birds that nest among trees and clearings. The absence of anthropogenic disturbances makes it particularly interesting for birdwatchers and nature photography enthusiasts. 👉 Tip: Bring binoculars and camera: The best times for viewing are sunrise and sunset, especially in spring and autumn. 🥾 Excursions between nature and archaeology: The area around the reserve, although partly not freely accessible, is full of paths and secondary paths that cross hills, woods and Etruscan archaeological sites. From Marsiliana it is possible to explore the Maremma landscape on foot, among pastures, farmhouses and still intact views. 👉 Tip: Combine a visit to the reserve with an itinerary that touches Saturnia, Sovana or the Albegna valley: nature and history come together in a single experience. 🛏️ Where to stay: In the surroundings of the reserve there are farmhouses surrounded by greenery, farms, renovated farmhouses and small B&Bs ideal for those seeking tranquility and direct contact with the countryside. Places such as Marsiliana, Manciano, Saturnia and Montemerano offer good solutions for your stay. 👉 Tip: Choose a rural structure with local organic products: your stay will also become a journey into the taste of the Maremma. Between private woods and timeless landscapes, the Marsiliana Reserve preserves the quietest and most authentic soul of the Tuscan Maremma.
