Sessera Valley

Guide: Mountains and Valleys, Piemonte

Sessera Valley – Piedmont: deep forests, industrial archaeology and resilient nature. The Sessera Valley extends in the north-east of the Biella area, in Piedmont, and follows the course of the stream of the same name. Less known than other Alpine valleys, it is an area full of charm: extensive forests, ancient abandoned industrial structures, paths that wind through silent valleys and hills covered with chestnut and beech trees. It is a valley that surprises with its authenticity and its subdued history. 🌲 Forests and widespread biodiversity: The valley is dominated by lush vegetation, with beech, birch, conifer and chestnut woods. The landscape is crossed by paths surrounded by nature, often little frequented, ideal for those who love to explore intact and varied environments. 👉 Tip: The Sentiero delle Sorgenti, near Campiglia Cervo, leads through natural springs, woods and panoramic views of the Upper Sessera Valley. 🏘️ Rural architecture and memories of work: The valley preserves evidence of the agricultural and mining past: stone huts, old mills and the remains of factories linked to iron processing and textile production. The small villages, such as Rosazza, Piedicavallo and Campiglia Cervo, offer an atmosphere of yesteryear. 👉 Tip: Visit the town of Rosazza, rich in esoteric symbols and eclectic-style buildings commissioned by Senator Federico Rosazza. 🚶 Mountain paths and itineraries: Hiking is the best way to cross the Sessera Valley. The routes lead to the Alpe di Mera, the Bocchetta della Boscarola, or connect to the nearby Alta Valsessera, in the heart of the Baraggia Biellese Park and the Special Nature Reserve. 👉 Tip: Take the Transhumance Trail, an ancient route used by shepherds, which crosses still active mountain pastures and wide views. 💧 The Sessera stream and its waters: The stream is the backbone of the valley: its clear waters pass through rocky gorges, small waterfalls and wetlands full of life. In summer, some areas offer quiet corners for a break or a regenerating swim. 👉 Tip: Near Piedicavallo, follow the course of the Sessera to discover crystal-clear pools and ancient stone bridges hidden in the greenery. 🧀 Mountain flavors and Biella cuisine: The local gastronomy reflects the simplicity of the mountains: polenta, aged cheeses, artisanal sausages and chestnut and mushroom dishes. The village festivals are opportunities to savor these flavors in a convivial and authentic context. 👉 Tip: In Campiglia, try supa mitonà, a rustic soup of the Biella tradition, served hot with black bread and melted butter. The Sessera Valley is a hidden place, where nature is intertwined with the past and every path leads to discover fragments of life and forgotten landscapes.
