Mount Legnone

Guide: Mountains and Valleys, Lombardia

Monte Legnone – Lombardy: the highest peak between Lake Como and Valtellina. Monte Legnone (2,609 m) is the highest peak of the Western Orobie Alps and represents an imposing visual landmark between the Alto Lario and Valtellina. Its pyramidal profile dominates the landscape from Colico and offers 360-degree views ranging from Lake Como to the peaks of Bernina. 🥾 Challenging climbs, wide landscapes: The normal route to Monte Legnone starts from Alpe Deleguaggio above Premana, or from Roccoli Lorla, above Dervio. The paths cross high-altitude meadows, scree and rocky ridges, with exposed sections and equipped passages in the final part. 👉 Tip: Start at dawn from the Roccoli Lorla refuge: the morning light accompanies the climb, and on clear days the summit offers a spectacular view up to Monviso and the Monte Rosa massif. ⛰️ Varied terrain and signs of the lived mountain: Legnone is a severe but fascinating mountain. The landscape changes rapidly: from coniferous forests to abandoned alpine pastures, grassy ridges and finally rocky slopes. Along the way you will encounter remains of military posts of the Cadorna Line, a memory of the First World War. 👉 Tip: Bring trekking poles with you and pay attention to the equipment: in the presence of snow or ice, even in summer, good physical preparation is required. 🌄 A symbolic peak, visible from afar: From the top, three great scenarios are embraced: Lake Como to the south, the Rhaetian Alps to the north and the first Orobic peaks to the east. The metal cross at the summit marks a point of arrival that is also one of the most panoramic in the whole of Lombardy. 👉 Tip: Plan your hike on a stable, haze-free day – the views are one of the most amazing elements of the experience. 🧀 Alpine tradition and territories to discover: Around the Legnone there are areas of great environmental and cultural value, such as Valvarrone and Alto Lario. The mountain hamlets preserve traces of ancient mountain pasture life, with stone houses, pastures and local products such as cheeses and high-altitude honey. 👉 Tip: After the excursion, stop in Tremenico or Introzzo: you will find small producers and trattorias where you can recover energy with mountain cuisine. Monte Legnone is a true peak: austere, panoramic and profoundly alpine. An experience that remains impressed not only for the effort, but for the unfiltered beauty it can offer.
