Seriana Valley

Guide: Mountains and Valleys, Lombardia

Val Seriana – Lombardy: villages, side valleys and paths in the mountains of Bergamo. The Seriana Valley develops along the course of the Serio river, from Bergamo to the foot of the Orobie. It is a wide valley, characterized by different landscapes: hilly meadows in the lower valley, wooded slopes in the middle valley and alpine walls in the highest part. An area where inhabited centers rich in history, protected nature and an authentic alpine culture coexist. ⛰️ Hikes between mountain huts, lakes and panoramic peaks: The Seriana Valley offers a wide network of well-marked trails, ideal for hiking or cycling. From the middle valley you climb towards alpine refuges such as Curò, Barbellino or Coca, passing through woods, pastures and glacial lakes. 👉 Tip: Start from Valbondione to reach the Curò Refuge: the path is panoramic and offers splendid views of the mountain basin and the Serio waterfalls. 🏘️ Historic villages and mountain art: Along the valley there are villages such as Clusone, Gromo and Ardesio, rich in artistic and architectural testimonies. You will encounter Renaissance frescoes, medieval towers, stone fountains and astronomical clocks. The historic centers are well-kept, with cobbled streets and lively squares. 👉 Tip: In Clusone visit the Fanzago Clock and the Dance of Death: unique works of their kind, visible for free in the town center. 🌿 Side valleys and protected environments: Next to the main valley there are secondary valleys such as Valcanale, Val di Scalve and Val Sangue. These more remote environments are perfect for quiet excursions, nature observation and immersion in the wildest Orobic landscapes. 👉 Tip: Explore the Val Sangue starting from Valgoglio: an itinerary between crystal-clear streams, wooden bridges and natural waterfalls. 🥘 Local cuisine and mountain traditions: The gastronomy of the Seriana Valley is linked to seasonality and altitude: artisanal cured meats, alpine cheeses, rich polenta and dishes based on game or mushrooms. The restaurants and refuges offer traditional recipes with local products. 👉 Tip: Taste polenta taragna with melted cheese in a hut in the middle of the valley: a simple, nutritious dish that is perfect after a walk. The Seriana Valley is a continuous passage between civilization and nature, between hidden art and generous mountains. Each stage offers a different face of the Alpine Bergamo.
