Trompia Valley

Guide: Mountains and Valleys, Lombardia

Val Trompia – Lombardy: mines, paths and workers' culture in the Brescian Pre-Alps. The Val Trompia extends from Brescia northwards, following the course of the Mella river among wooded reliefs, ancient factories and villages with a productive past. Known for its long mining and metallurgical tradition, today the valley offers routes through nature, history and local crafts. ⛏️ Historical mines and archaeology of work: The Pezzaze Mines are one of the most evident testimonies of the valley's mining past. Along the tunnels carved into the rock you will discover original environments, tools and stories of everyday life. In Sarezzo, the I Magli Museum tells the story of the transformation of iron through the ingenuity and effort of generations. 👉 Tip: Choose the guided tour with the mining train in Pezzaze: it is suitable for all ages and offers an immersive experience in the heart of the mountain. 🏞️ Mountain and scenic trails: The slopes of the valley are crossed by hiking routes that lead to peaks such as Monte Guglielmo or Dosso Alto. Along the paths you will encounter woods, clearings and old mountain pastures, in environments that are not very frequented but full of charm. 👉 Tip: Going up from Collio, reach Monte Ario: the path is well marked and from the top there is a wide view of Val Sabbia and Lake Iseo. 🏘️ Mountain villages and artisan testimonies: Villages such as Marcheno, Lodrino, Bovegno and Collio preserve elements of rural architecture and the remains of forges, smelting furnaces and mills. The narrow streets, stone portals and frescoed churches tell of an industrious past still visible in everyday details. 👉 Tip: In Bovegno visit the Ethnographic Museum: a collection of objects, photographs and utensils related to life in the mountains and manual work. 🍲 Local flavours and gastronomic tradition: The cuisine of the valley enhances simple and quality ingredients: Nostrano Valtrompia DOP cheese, smoked cured meats, game, honey and chestnuts. Polenta often accompanies hearty dishes, linked to the seasons and peasant culture. 👉 Tip: Taste local cheese in a mountain hut near Irma or Collio: each product has different characteristics, linked to altitude and craftsmanship. Val Trompia preserves landscapes, memories and ancient gestures. Walking through its mountains means encountering an authentic valley, forged by the work and resistance of the mountain.
