Mulargia and Flumendosa Lakes

Guide: Lakes, Sardegna

Lakes Mulargia and Flumendosa – Sardinia: calm waters, wooded shores and deep silence in the heart of the island. The Mulargia and Flumendosa Lakes are located in the center-south of Sardinia, nestled between granite hills and gentle reliefs of Sarcidano and Barbagia di Seulo. Born from hydraulic damming works, today they are suspended landscapes, where nature, water and rural memory coexist in a fragile and harmonious balance. 🌿 High-altitude nature and regenerating silence: The banks of the two basins are populated by holm oaks, downy oaks, strawberry trees and reeds. The colors vary with the seasons: intense greens in spring, golden reflections in summer, low mists in autumn. The fauna is rich and discreet: cormorants, herons, birds of prey and, underwater, carp, perch and trout. It is an area little traveled by tourism, where time passes slowly. 👉 Tip: Kayak Lake Mulargia at dawn: the still water reflects the sky, and everything seems still and alive at the same time. 🚣 Experiences between water and land: Both lakes lend themselves to boat trips, sport fishing, scenic trekking and days of total relaxation. From Nurri, Orroli, Goni and Seui there are paths that touch ancient sheepfolds, tall forests and natural viewpoints. Away from the crowded coasts, this freshwater Sardinia offers a more intimate dimension. 👉 Tip: Go up to the viewpoint of Lake Flumendosa near Villanova Tulo: the view embraces the lake and the peaks of Gennargentu in the distance. 🏞️ Archaeology and traditions on your doorstep: Not far from the shores there are important Nuragic sites such as Nuraghe Arrubiu (Orroli) and Pranu Mutteddu (Goni), sacred areas, domus de janas and pastoral settlements that tell of millennia of cultural continuity. Many villages still retain traditional architecture, community ovens and seasonal rituals related to water and land. 👉 Tip: Visit the Nuraghe Arrubiu in the late afternoon, then have dinner at a farmhouse in Nurri based on local products and wine from the area. 🍴 Sober cuisine and authentic flavors: The lake environment has little influence on the cuisine, which remains anchored to the agro-pastoral tradition: soup with fennel, lamb with artichokes, pani de saba, aged cheeses and almond desserts. Nearby wineries produce robust wines, ideal for accompanying substantial dishes. 👉 Tip: Taste the hot civraxiu with pecorino cheese and thistle honey: bread, cheese and sweetness in the most essential form. 🎉 Community Events and Sincere Hospitality: The villages overlooking the lakes celebrate water and land with patron saint festivals, peasant days, festivals and summer concerts on the shores. The hospitality is discreet but profound: you share the meal, the weather and the landscape naturally. It is a lesser-known Sardinia, but closer. 👉 Tip: Take part in a summer festival in Seulo or Nurri: music, local dishes and the reflection of the lake at dusk will do the rest. Between the lakes of Mulargia and Flumendosa, water is not just a resource: it is a slow rhythm, a calm horizon and a mirror of a silent and deep Sardinia.
