The Wine and Flavour Route of Valtellina – Lombardy: dry stone walls, high-altitude vineyards and flavours that taste of the mountains.
The Valtellina Wine and Flavour Route runs along the lonely slope of the Rhaetian Alps, from Berbenno to Tirano, crossing villages, vineyard terraces and hills supported by thousands of stone walls. A hand-built landscape, where viticulture is intertwined with fatigue and beauty. 🍇 Mountain Nebbiolo and wines with a strong character:
The symbolic grape variety is Nebbiolo, here called Chiavennasca. Elegant and structured wines are born from its grapes: Valtellina Superiore DOCG (with the sub-areas Sassella, Inferno, Grumello, Valgella, Maroggia), Rosso di Valtellina DOC and Sforzato di Valtellina DOCG, obtained from grapes dried on racks.
👉 Tip: Visit a traditional winery in Inferno or Grumello: listening to the stories of the producers in front of a glass of Sforzato really makes you understand what it means to grow here. 🏞️ Paths through vineyards, villages and castles:
Along the route you will encounter castles, Romanesque churches, hamlets suspended between the forest and the sky. The wine trails connect the vineyard areas to panoramic points, such as Castel Grumello or the Sanctuary of Sassella, overlooking the curves of the Adda river and the peaks.
👉 Tip: Walk the stretch between Sondrio and Poggiridenti: in a few hours you will cross vineyards, stone walls and viewpoints that leave you speechless. 🧀 Strong and authentic flavors:
The dishes of Valtellina come from the mountains: pizzoccheri, polenta taragna, Bresaola IGP, Bitto and Casera, high-altitude honey, rye bread and dried chestnuts. Each product has a deep bond with the territory and with those who live there.
👉 Tip: Book a lunch at a farmhouse with a seasonal menu: the combination of pizzoccheri and Rosso di Valtellina fully expresses the soul of the place. 🚲 An itinerary to discover step by step:
The road can be traveled by car, bike or on foot, with stops that alternate tastings, cultural visits and open views of the mountains. Small museums, crotti and wineries offer authentic experiences, off the beaten track.
👉 Tip: Start from Teglio, home of pizzoccheri, and continue towards Tirano: along the way you will find farms, mills, stepped vineyards and ever-changing views.
In Valtellina, wine grows between the stones and the sky. The road that tells it is made up of hands that work the land, of frank flavors and landscapes sculpted by patience.
