Silan Wine and Flavours Route

Guide: Wine Routes, Calabria

Silan Wine and Flavours Route – A journey through woods, vineyards at high altitude and the flavours of the Calabrian mountains. The Silan Wine and Flavours Route winds through the heart of the Sila plateau, crossing unspoilt landscapes, ancient villages and agri-food traditions that have their roots in the pastoral world. Here taste meets the pure air of the woods, among centuries-old pine forests and fields cultivated with care and passion. 🍷 Mountain wines, intense and identifying: Although Sila is best known for its dairy and agricultural products, in recent years native wines grown at high altitudes, such as Magliocco and Greco nero, have been rediscovered. Robust wines, with a rich aromatic profile, which tell the resistance of mountain viticulture. 👉 Tip: Visit a small winery between Spezzano and Acri: you will be surprised by the scents of forest and resin in the local reds. 🧀 The authentic flavors of the Sila tradition: The real protagonists of the table are mountain cheeses – such as caciocavallo, butirro and pecorino cheese – together with artisanal cured meats, porcini mushrooms and the famous Sila IGP potatoes. Simple, genuine and seasonal products. 👉 Tip: Stop at a cheese factory or small local shop to sample aged cheeses with rye bread and chestnut honey. 🌲 Landscapes of silence and lush nature: The road moves through dense forests of larch pine, mountain lakes, open pastures and small villages such as San Giovanni in Fiore, Longobucco and Camigliatello Silano. An ideal area for hiking, cycling or simple walks in nature. 👉 Tip: Ride along a stretch of the ancient Sila railway now converted into a cycle path: a slow and immersive way to discover the mountain. 🍴 Warm and seasonal cuisine: The Sila cuisine is substantial, designed to face the cold winters: legume soups, mushroom soups, homemade pasta and dishes based on potatoes and field vegetables are at the heart of the tradition. 👉 Tip: Try the "pasta and potatoes alla silana" in a mountain trattoria: a poor dish, but incredibly tasty. 🛌 Hospitality among wooden huts and farmhouses: The area offers refuges, farms and cozy B&Bs, often obtained from ancient stone or wooden structures, with fireplaces lit in winter and genuine breakfasts in summer. The atmosphere is familiar, the pace slow, the air crisp even in summer. 👉 Tip: Sleep in a structure overlooking a lake or immersed in the woods: at night, the silence is interrupted only by the sounds of nature. The Silan Wine and Flavours Route is an authentic journey through taste, landscape and tradition. An invitation to rediscover the Calabrian mountains through its scents, its dishes and its people.
