Strada del Radicchio Rosso di Treviso and Variegato di Castelfranco

Guide: Wine Routes, Veneto

Strada del Radicchio Rosso di Treviso and Variegato di Castelfranco – Veneto: winter gardens, local flavours and agricultural landscapes to discover. The Strada del Radicchio Rosso di Treviso e Variegato di Castelfranco crosses the Venetian plain between Treviso, Castelfranco, Istrana and the Sile. It is an itinerary that enhances two horticultural excellences recognized at European level, linked to a long agricultural tradition and present in the kitchens of the entire region. 🥬 Two IGP excellences, one land: Radicchio Rosso di Treviso PGI is known for its strong taste and crunchy texture, obtained thanks to manual processing and a bleaching phase in spring water. The Variegato di Castelfranco PGI, lighter and more decorative, has a delicate flavor and is very versatile in the kitchen. Both are harvested in the middle of winter. 👉 Tip: Take part in one of the Radicchio Festivals between November and February in the municipalities of Dosson, Preganziol or Zero Branco: you will find food stands, local producers and seasonal dishes. 🏘️ Walled towns, markets and busy countryside: The route includes places rich in history and linked to peasant culture: Castelfranco Veneto, with its historic center and the farmer's market; Treviso, elegant and crossed by canals; and a network of small villages such as Scorzè, Quinto and Resana, where the cultivation of radicchio is part of daily life. 👉 Tip: Stop in Castelfranco on a Saturday morning: a farmers' market with fresh produce and local specialties is held within the historic walls. 🚲 Waterways, vegetable gardens and paths between the resurgences: The area is crisscrossed by secondary roads, cycle paths and easy paths, ideal for exploring cultivated fields, Venetian villas and natural springs. The environment is flat and also suitable for family outings, with many possibilities for gastronomic stops along the way. 👉 Tip: Cycle the stretch from Scandolara di Zero Branco to Quinto: rural landscape, small producers, mills and canals in a quiet route. 🍽️ Seasonal flavours and genuine hospitality: Farmhouses, restaurants and trattorias in the area offer radicchio dishes in many variations: raw in salads, grilled, risotto or baked. In winter, the menu is also enriched with typical Venetian dishes and recipes related to country cuisine. 👉 Tip: Book a lunch at the farmhouse during the harvest period: many offer themed menus, visits to the vegetable garden and guided tastings. The Radicchio Road is a seasonal journey in the heart of the Veneto plain, among excellent crops, fresh products and territories that tell the link between agriculture and tradition.
